Please help lost crucial files!! In the Home Directory

I installed a new server,  copied users home directory / folder to the new sever (new home directory folder)

Users seeing old files with old data,  These were years of accounting files, I had made 3 copies of the backup, the old server is intact the folders were also copied separately. yet all these backup copies have old files.

I did search the holder and there are some hidden files that I think are related they have a ~! in front of them they are only 1kb will bring up the excel program but then i get an error stating corruption or improper file.

I'm positive this has something to do with sync or roaming or temp files.

**Update, I think they maybe in the Windows/CSC files but due to security I can't access these files.

Hi,

Office files which started with ~ are temp files. They will occur when you open an Office file and should be deleted automatically when you close it - all modification are stored in that ~ file until you click Save. Office will rename that file to replace the original file. Sometimes temp files may not be deleted correctly but it should not affect the result, unless such files are never Saved before the copy you made.

Can you still accessing the old server now? Open the files with same name as those files with ~ (say a file named ~bill.xlsx and you should able to find the bill.xlsx), copy the bill.xlsx to Desktop and see if data is new or old.

If it is new, run a robocopy \\oldserver\share \\newserver\share to do another copy as migration. See if files could be updated correctly.

Hi nambi

since you're talking about  user home directories, is it possible they've set those folders offline? if so the Client Side Cache (CSC) still tries to synchronize the files with the versions from the old home directory UNC. And if that's not available it will show locally available copies of it.

Either you should have disabled all files set offline before the migration or you can alter the links of synced files by editing the CSC repository with csccmd.exe (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/884739).

Good luck

Lyndon
