Planning Migration to a new SCCM Primary Site in a new AD Forest
Here is the planned migration strategy:
·
Two Active Directory Forests, configured with a Forest Two-way trust.
·
Original Primary site is placed in the original AD Forest.
·
New Primary site is attached as a child site to Original Primary site
·
Client will remain in original Forest.
·
SLP is installed in the new Primary site.
·
Clients will be reassigned, using GPO with the new site code
If there is a situation where it is not possible to publish SLP in WINS, how can clients locate the SLP? Is the only option to reinstall
the SCCM Client with SMSSLP value? Or is there any other option to get clients to locate the SLP? Will it work if I add the SMSSLP value in registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CCM\SMSSLP ?
My experience says that a SLP is required when reassigning Clients to a Primary site located in another AD Forest. Please let me know
if I am wrong.
Many thanks.

That's true, see

I wouldn't use a GPO to reassign clients. I had to cleanup a mess once where someone did that. The GPO tattoo's the registry and once that's happened the only way to reassign that client again is to cleanup the registry or use GPO again. I'd use a script.

Hi,
Correct a SLP is required when clients are not able to read/access AD information. You can provide the SLP information in the commandline when installing the client. It's not required to have WINS if the parameter is specified in the commandline.Kent Agerlund | My blogs: http://blog.coretech.dk/author/kea/ and http://scug.dk/ | Twitter @Agerlund | Linkedin: /kentagerlund

Thanks for your replies. I will listen to Johns recommendation and reassign clients using script instead of gpo and Kents post insured that a SLP is definitely required. And like I described there is two alternatives that are supported to inform
the clients about the SLP, alternative one requires WINS and alternative two requires the clients to be reinstalled with the SMSSLP value.

Now to my question, is it possible to inform Clients about the SLP without WINS and without reinstalling clients? For example; Like I described earlyer, by modifying registry.

It can be done by modifying the registry (that's the unsupported way). The official answer would be: reinstall the clients using the smsslp parameter.
