Permissions issue
I have a certain site collection that has a document library. in that doc library is an excel file that can be checked out, opened in edit mode, edited, saved, and checked back in. However, you CANNOT Edit Properties or view the version history. I've checked and the file inherites from the doc library, and that in turn inherits from the site. Myself and the site collection owner that brought it to my attention are both getting access denied when trying to edit properties or view version history. I am a server admin, farm admin, site collection admin and also listed as an owner since i'm the one who initially created the site collection. There is NO WAY I should ever see "access denied" on anything on that site. the other person i'm dealing with is a site owner and i recently added him as a site collection admin. we both see the same thing. Here are a couple of interesting things: When I go to add a new person to the site, under "Give Permission" the drop down that lists the permission levels has (sitename) Owners [Full Control, Limited Access] How can it have this? how can an owner with full control also have limited access? also, I noticed that when i view the permissions for the file itself, under the Actions drop down, there is no option for Edit Permissions. It appears that i cannot break the inheritance for the document from the doc library. also, i've already created a new doc library and uploaded a copy of the file. same thing. I've also created a new doc library and uploaded a complety different file (word doc) and it does the same thing. ????? There are probably 30 doc librariew on this site and i've gone in and randomly checked files and this is not happening on any of them. only this one document library, and apparently any new ones i create. Any suggestions on where I should look? thanks.

that's the frustruting part. the one and only item in the doc library (the excel file) inherits from the doc library. and in turn, the DL inherits from the site. it's on the top level site. the site owner group has full control This is the same way as a million other documents that are working fine, but something is different about this one.

I'm confused. Are you saying that you cannot edit properties for any file within a document library or does this behavior only exist with this particular file? Have you made any recent environment changes such as hot fixes, service packs, or cumulative updates? Are you building sites/libraries off of a custom template?
