Permissions Issue
Hello All,
I am facing one issue in WSS 3.0. I have one main site and its sub-site. I am having one user having contribute permission on sub-site and read permission on main site. This user is able to see all the users of main site when he clicks on ALL Users page
option in People and Groups. Please tell me how i can stop this user having read permission on main site by viewing all the users of main site.
Thanks
Ankit

Hi Ankit,
You need to revoke the permissions of this user from the Main Site.
For that, in your main site -> Site Actions -> People and Groups -> Go to Reader's Group
Remove the particular user from the Reader's group in WSS 3.0BR, PM

Hi Prasanjit,
Thanks for your reply i tried this but still i am facing the same problem. As users has contribute permission on sub site and when user goes to this sub site and clicks on upper right menu with Welcome <username> on it and selects "My Settings"
he gets redirected on people.aspx page. Here he gets All Users options under People and Group and when user clicks on this all users option he can see all the user of main site. Please suggest me how i can solve this problem.
Thanks.

Hi,
Since the user information list (including all people or all groups and so on) is a special list, you can go to
settings > list settings > permission for this list to set the list level permission as usually.
Hope it is helpful!

Go to Site Action of home site and select site permissions and find the respective user. Click on user name and give the read only permission. (You will see all permissions level checkbox's)
Same thing you have to do on subsite.
Still find any problem, let me know

Hi,
"All People" displays all users from the site collection and not just current sub site. You can apply filter on the views (Detail
view and List view) so that it would be visible only to Site Admin (Owner group).
1. Go to settings > list settings .
2. Click on view name under Views section.
3. In Filter section, select "Show items only when the following is true:" radio button.
4. Create the filter as "Is Site Admin" "is equal to" "Yes".
Drawback: now user except Admin would not be able to view users in "Groups" also.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Hi Ankit,
You can give the permission from site level to document level in sharepoint.
Give the read only permission on toplevel site and provide contribute permission to other subsites. (wherever you want)
You follow my method and check the result.
Go to Site Action of home site and select Advanced Permission -->
site permissions --> Add User. Give the Readonly permission to this user.
Now Click on subsite, where you want to give contribute permission to this user
Go to Site Action of subsite and select Advanced Permission -->
site permissions
Here you will be able to see username. If permission is not edited then you have to follow these steps:
Click on "Actions" menu and click "Edit Permission" and Select the user and uncheck the readonly permission and check contribute permission and click ok.
I am sure it will work. If you need more help please let me know

Hi,
"Drawback: now user except Admin would not be able to view users in "Groups" also."
Using the filter on view approach, site admin will be able to see all the users of site.

Hi,
@ Rohit M.
Thanks for you help Rohit I solved my problem. What I did I, added filter as you said in default view which is for all the user of site and created one personal view for super admin of site and now only this super admin can view all the users when he switch
to this view which i created. :)
But in case if site has more then one admin then i have to create separate view. :(
Thanks

Hi,
If you have added the filter as "Is Site Admin" "is equal to" "Yes" in default view then users from owner group would be
able to view all the users in default view and you dont require to create personal view. If you are unable to view all users for a particular user, add this user to owners group and check.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
@ Rohit M.
Yes i followed the same procedure as you explained but users from site owners group are not able to view all users in default view that's why i created personal view.
Thanks
