Permissions Always Additive?
I have several different groups for a site (that has subsites with unique permissions) with some members in more then one group. Each group may have a different permission level. Will a member run into a problem should they be in two different groups with different permissions on the same site? I am under the impression that the permissions are additive, meaning the higher level permission will take the forefront. I am also wondering if this may cause a problem with members syncing a document library.

Yes, users can exists in 2 different groups in same site based on the requirement. But you need to plan it accordingly and design. Following are the articles that talks about the best practices to follow while creating permission structure. Hope it helps.
