Performing OSD Task Sequence on Brand New Out of the Box Computers
Good Afternoon Everyone - In the past few months, I have introduced SCCM 2007 and many of it's features to our network. Recently, I've been playing around attempting to get OSD (Operating System Deployment) to work. Unfortunatly, it looks like I'm missing something as I can't get a few "features" to work. I've inserted Windows 7 images, drivers, a boot image (adding to the 2 there already) as well as the updates and packages that I had there already. I've created a few Task Sequences and tried advertising them to different collections. These have worked fairly well as far as OS upgrades go. Here's what I need help with - Somewhat frequently, we receive new (out of the box) workstations. These are straight from the manufacturer and have never been on our network. I've attempted to use the Task Sequences that I've created using boot media, but each time I boot these new computers to the media and try, I get "Failed to Run Task Sequence." Before doing this, I had gone as far as advertising the Task Sequence to "All Unknown Computers," but still nogo. If someone could provide steps, a couple of links, or point me in the right direction; then I would be very appreciative. Thanks for your help! Ben K.

First you need to incorporate MDT into SCCM. Next you need to see this link. http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/maikkoster/archive/2010/01/13/using-a-custom-boot-wizard-to-boot-known-and-unknown-computers-in-sccm-and-choose-a-task-sequence-to-run-step-by-step.aspx Next you'll need to use MDT integrated task sequences and custom boot media. Thank You - I"m looking over it right now. So are you basically saying that there is no native support for this in SCCM?Ben K.

Sure there is but Maik's stuff and MDT make it much more reliable and easier. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum/|

Looks like I'm a little lost. I'm trying to set this up and have created a new App on the default website. However, when configuring, it's asking me for my database and credentials for my MDT database. I have installed MDT on the server, but not much else as I really don't know that much about it. Is there something that I need to do in regards to setting up MDT before following the instructions from the link you gave me? ThanksBen K.

Ben, best advice to get a start on this topic, get the Deployment CD from Johan Arwidmark: http://www.truesec.com/deploymentcd It contains a lot of step by step guides and videos, that will guide you through these processes and get you started. After it's working, we can start extending it with some more fancy stuff ;-) Regards Maik

What is the SMSTS.log saying about "Failed to Run Task Sequence"? What's the error code displayed? The SMSTS.log can be found in the X:\Windows\Temp\SMSTS folder. Have you checked all packages that are configured in the Task Sequence? (look at Task Sequence - References tab for that) With the SMSTS.log and error code it is easier for us to help you.My ConfigMgr blog: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com Follow me on Twitter: @henkhoogendoorn

Have you right clicked on the Computer Association and imported the MAC and computer name then it will be in the OSD folder. Then if you had the advertisement/TS set to the folder then it should see the policy.http://www.sccm-tools.com http://sms-hints-tricks.blogspot.com
