Performance View for Services
Hello,
I've certain application services monitored for few servers. I need to create a performance view which shows me the status of these services when I click on the view. I need some documentation or help in this.
SCOM 2007 SP1Thanks, Harry :-)

Hi
Do you mean performance view? If you want to see the status of a service on a server (up \ down) then you'll need a state view:

Hi Graham,
I created a state view as you said.
In Criteria:
Show data related to: Windows Server 2000 Operating System and
Show data contained in a specific group: Windows Server 2000 Computer Group.
What should I check in the check box below to show states of services only.
Note: I've created custom monitor in the Windows Server 2000 Operating System->Availability->Core Windows Service Rollup to monitor these application services.
What else should I select in the display. Currently State, In Maintenance Mode, Name and Path are selected. Thanks, Harry :-)

Hi
Can you create a group of these services (Authoring > Groups) and then scope the view to that group.
I tend to use the Authoring Template for service monitoring as it creates a class that I can target which makes the views easier to create. I have a walk through here which includes creating the state view:

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the link to the document above.
I created the group. Now the quetion is when I open the authoring template - windows service, I enter a name, change the MP name to a custom MP. However I do not get an option to target this to a group I created earlier. No option to set performance data
collection settings either. Though I complete the template I find the object discovery targeted to windows computer. I disable this, and taget and enable to a group I created earlier. Now when I go and expand this monitors I do not see two service running
state for the windows service library and my custom MP. Only the Service running state for windows service library is available.
Are the screenshots in the document for R2 ?Thanks, Harry :-)

Hi
When using the authoring template, you get one window to specify the MP name and the next window allows you to set the service to monitor and the group to target - it is on page 5 of the pdf file that I linked to above.
Cheers

In my SCOM 2007 SP1, it does not allow me to target this to a group. The only option I have is to select the service and nothing else. Thanks, Harry :-)

I think I meesed up. I wanted to create a distributed application.
It should have three components Gold, Silver and Bronze. In each component a sub component as Application Service name say (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, CA Arcserve Management Service, Print Spooler, Server , Ops Mgr Health Service, etc.). Under
this sub component I want servers where these services are running. At the end I want to create a dashboard for the same where I can pull out a report for them.
Is this possible ? I do not wish to use any external tool other than SCOm 2007 SP1.Thanks, Harry :-)

Hi,
Regarding how to create Distributed Application, please refer to:
How to Create a Distributed Application in Operations Manager 2007
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb381200.aspx
For SCOM 2007 SP1, I think Service Level Dashboard 2.0 is not supported. For more information, please refer to:

Meanwhile, I noticed we can view Distributed Application Diagram with Vision 2010; however, it is for SCOM 2007 R2.

I created custom windows service using the management pack template-> windows service. These in turn created Object discoveries and monitors. Now I went to Authoring ->Distributed Application and created a new distributed application. Added component
with server name and dragged the custom services I created earlier. Now when I go to the Reporting->Service Level Dashboard->Service Level Dashboard report, I select the tiem range, and defailt OS. then I execute the report and I get the service level
availability report for the same.
If somebody needs more help you can contact me directly.
Points to note:
You have to create custom windows service, if you have created a custom monitor for the service it won't show up in the entity field of distributed application.
Wait for sometime, approx 24 hours for the change to sink in and then can only you get the distributed application working in service level availability report.
Hope this helps others.
Thanks, Harry :-)
