Patch order discrepancy from MS support
I am working with MS support on an issue that they think patching to service pack 2 will fix. We are currently patched up to SP1. They are insisting that we install patches in the order below. However, everything I've read says that SP2
for moss and wss includes all patches previous to it's release (including hotfixes, infrastructure updates, cumulative updates). Is the support guy incorrect:

Well the first thing is that if the SP2's already contain all these fixes you won't at least lose anything but time in installing them first.
Secondly the SP2s will not contain fixes that came out up to a few weeks before the SP2s came out because of the need for MS to test the SP2s.
and there might be some (typically "only run this if you have problems" types) fixes which aren't included in the SP2.
But the real answer is that while I think you are probably right, you are involved with MS support whether you like it or not and so having presumably paid for their support you will need to follow what they say you must do otherwise you have been
paying for nothing (and will lead yourself open to "we told you not to do it that way, so that is why it isn't working").2010 Books:
SPF 2010; SPS 2010; SPD 2010; InfoPath 2010; Workflow etc.
2007 Books:
WSS 3.0; MOSS 2007; SPD 2007; InfoPath 2007; PerformancePoint; SSRS; Workflow
Both lists also include books in French; German; Spanish with even more languages in the 2007 list.

I would agree that installing the redundant patches can't hurt anything. However, this will increase our down time and will make the upgrade more complex. It is always a stressfull thing patching sharepoint and I would rather not hold my breath
after each patch is installed on every front end. Additionally, MS' own instructions to get a fresh install of RTM current is to install SP2 and the latest CU (nothing else). It's a little disconcerting that the last email I got
from the support guy was that I needed to install these seperately because the infrastructure updates were not included in sp2 (which is completely false.) I guess I will wait for the support guy to give me the blessing to just install sp2. Otherwise,
I think I'll need to request another specialist.

I agree with Mike. However, you are correct... Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides full support for Windows Server 2008 and Internet Information Services (IIS) 7, extended browser support, new operations and
properties for the Stsadm command line tool, improved functionality for existing features, and hot fixes for known issues.
Service Pack 2 includes SP1 and all the updates released up to this service pack. For a description of SP2, see
Description of 2007 Microsoft Office servers Service Pack 2 (SP2) and of 2007 Microsoft Office servers Language Pack Service Pack 2 (SP2)(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=149890)
Do I need SP1 for WSS and MOSS before I install SP2?
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/priyo/archive/2009/05/01/do-i-need-sp1-for-wss-and-moss-before-i-install-sp2.aspx. All CUs after 12/2008 included the previous updates
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/josrod/archive/2008/12/17/latest-wss-and-moss-patches.aspx and as of the April 2010 CU release the only pre-requisite is SP2...
