Pagefile exclusions not working in DPM2012 R2

I'm unable to get pagefile exclusions to work with DPM 2012 R2 rollup 7.  Using Server 2012 R2 as Hosts for Server 2012 R2 VMs.  I've created a seperate .vhdx file for each VM and moved the pagefile into it.  I've named the files in the format Pagefile_Vm1.vhdx, Pagefile_Vm2.vhdx and so on.  I've ran SetDPMGlobalProperty -HyperVPagefileExclusions "pagefile*.*" on the DPM server.

Yet when I check my recover points for the VM, each one lists the pagefile_vm1.vhdx as a recoverable option.

Any ideas what is wrong here?

Hi,

please make sure, that his VHD Files are not backing up again.

The Exclusion is backing up the excluded VHDX once at the initial Backup, after this, it should not be backed up anymore.

Please check this fact.

If I browse through the Recovery section, the Pagefile.vhdx file is still listed as having a recovery point on disk for each express-full backup.  I assume this means it is actually backing it up at that time.

Hi,

Delta changes for that page file .vhdx file should not be replicated to the DPM server.  You can verify that is working my making a new file on that pagefile.vhdx, make a new recovery point, restore that pagefile.vhdx and mount it then check to see that the new file is not present.

I have created an empty txt file on my pagefile vhdx, and then restored it to a different location after a couple days.  The txt file is present in the restored.vhdx, so DPM is not excluding the pagefile.vhdx as configured.

I've also just applied the re-released Rollup 7 for Data Protection Manager and modified the txt file.  I will repeat my restore tomorrow and see if the changes are picked up to confirm.  I know there were issues with the first release of rollup 7 not expiring recovery points due to some powershell behavior changes, maybe this is a symptom of that as well.

I need to ask just to make sure. Are you sure you have configured your syntax correctly matching the filenames? I am not sure whether it is case sensitive. Note your filename starts with an uppercase. I always use such filenames:

  • HOSTNAME_C.vhdx
  • HOSTNAME_D.vhdx
  • HOSTNAME_pagefile.vhdx

So I configure DPM in such a way that when the filename contains *pagefile.vhd* it should be excluded, using the following syntax:

Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DPMServerName "SCDPM01" -HyperVPagefileExclusions "*pagefile.vhd*"
