Package documentation, export as image?
Howdy all,As part of our effort to generate documentation about our processes, I thought it'd be handy to have pictures of what packages look like. Seems a simple enough request. I see a similar post from '06 where Jamie indicates Kirk said that functionality is targeted for SQL Documenter http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/9f0a32a3-3f62-417c-ba02-6acef6cd96f0Is there any update on it? I found another thread discussing third party solutions but it didn't seem to really touch on the SSIS aspect. For an initial pass, I'd be happy with just an image of the control flow at 100% zoom and then for each dataflow and event handler, a similar capture. I'm surprised BIDS Helper didn't offer something like that and maybe that'd be a verse I could contribute. Anyone aware of a product or means of getting an export beyond screen caps?

The SQL Server Metadata Toolkit released sometime after the RTM of 2005. However, it is a bit flaky and requires some adjustment to the underlying code to browse through the objects (didn't anyone think that there would be containers within containers and that the tasks within the containers would need to be documented?). Furthermore, to get a true idea of the dependencies on the various database objects, you would need to parse the sql queries used. This tool is useful, but I don't know that it goes the full distance for providing accurate and complete documentation of the SSIS Packages. In any case, there are a few third party tools that have been mentioned, namely the BI Documentor (Recently acquired by pragmatic works), or the SSIS Documentor (Horrible customer service... I have a license for this tool but cannot install it after some registry mix ups when the "my documents" folder was moved to a different location... I still haven't been able to use it.) As for just taking screen shots, that should work as long as the intended audience is able to discern through name standardization and annotations exactly what is happening on the control flow and / or data flow and event handlers. I'm sure that an open source documentor, as either part of BIDS Helper or as a stand alone product would be greatly appreciated by the community as a whole. You might be able to take the base from the metadata toolkit above and build that out into a more complete product. If you are able to create such a tool definately mention it here on the forums. Please mark answered posts. Thanks for your time.

Bah, I downloaded that paper in March of 2008 and apparently never read it! At any rate, thank you for the pointer, it's always far easier to crib off someone else's code than write it from scratch. If you don't mind, I'll leave this open for a day to see if anyone else has any input/feedback. Otherwise, I'll report back when/if I get a diagrammer working

You can check 3rd party product like BIDocumenter for ssis documentation it has feature you asking. It exports all package images and DataFlow Images as well. Another good thing about Exported images are they include variables and connections in the same image so you get full document in one screen. http://pragmaticworks.com/help/bidocumenter/scr/SSIS_Features.htm http://pragmaticworks.com/images/screenshots/bidocumenter/screen30.jpg SSIS-Tutorials-FAQs | Convert DTS to SSIS | Document SSIS | SSIS Tasks | Real-time SSIS Monitoring
