PXE not working, no SMSPXE.log file

We are attempting to implement PXE Operating System Deployment on the following:

SCCM 2012 R2

Server 2012 R2

HTTPS Management and Distribution Points

PXE Support added after implementation of DP, not during original install

PXE OSD is not working and the first thing I am noticing is that there is no C:\CCM_SMS\Logs\SMSPXE.log file. All other expected log files are present in that location. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\DP\IsPXE and PXEInstalled both are 1 which means True, correct? HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\DP\Logging\SMSPXE\LogPath is SMSPXE.log which should just place it in the default logs directory I assume. A search says it is nowhere on system.

The Reminst share exists on the DP. Boot images have been set to deploy from the PXE-enabled distribution point and exist in SMSImages. The Boot Images themselves are NOT set to "copy the content in this package to a package share on distribution points"

Is it possible that the log does not exist because it has not received any requests? I am not using any helper addresses or dhcp options, but I have PXE booted several computers on the same subnet as the DP. It should be able to receive those broadcasts, correct?

Netstat -ab shows UDP 67, 69 and 4011 open by wdsserver but none show a state of "LISTENING"

How can I troubleshoot this issue further?

Have you verified that there were no issues installing the WDS feature, and that the service is running? Has the RemoteInstall directory been created?

Try running the following from the command prompt to configure WDS:

wdsutil /initialize-server /server:<servername> /reminst:C:\RemoteInstall

How are you pointing the clients to the PXE server?

If I remember correctly SCCM should setup WDS and PXE during the installation for the role for Software Distribution. Did you check the box for it to install WDS and set it up? SCCM should handle that. I however have had 0 success with SCCM doing it and have had to manually add the WDS role using the servers roles setup THEN checking the box in the Software Distribution setup.

I would start by unchecking the box if you have it checked and then uninstalling and re-installing WDS and rebooting in between. Then reinstall WDS then re-add the roll to the Software Distribution role in SCCM. I am not saying remove the Software Distribution role, just the PXE part.

also check the smsdpprov.log.

Naturally I found the $*(&*%^ SMSPXE.log file 5 minutes after my post. Installation looks good.

My issue is apparently my HTTPS environment. The log is filled with:

"PXE Provider is not active. Ignoring DHCP message"

and many

"In SSL, but with no client cert"

Our certificate infrastructure is already in place. I can successfully image using our certs with standalone media and all clients are communicating exclusively with HTTPS. Can't find a lot of documentation on the PXE in an HTTPS environment though.

Any ideas?

Looks related to your problem. PXE could be using the wrong cert.
