PXE Boot Help!

Hello,

I have a few questions. I have a System Center that is wired to a Domain switch then wired to a non-domain switch. The non-domain switch will be used to do PXE boots from laptops to deploy images. Last time we tried it over the regular switch, it was mazing out the switch and breaking things. I am getting a message for DHCP when PXE booting since that switch doesn't have DHCP. Is there a way to enable DHCP but don't go across the domain switch?

Questions:

How do you have it set up?

When pushing over the network, does it overload the switch?

First of all, nobody talks about a "domain switch" or "non-domain switch". Switches pass packets around, and whether or not you have a domain controller connected to a particular switch doesn't really matter to the process of DHCP and PXE.

What does matter is whether you have a DHCP server available for clients to get an IP from. If you don't have one connected to your switch then you'll need to set one up. That's easy to do on a windows server, and many switches can actually be configured to function as a DHCP server.

Usually people have multiple switches connected to each other so that you can get to a DHCP server from anywhere. But if you're having network capacity issues you might need to do something like set up a separate vlan and subnet for your imaging so you can use your second switch just for that purpose. But they should still probably be connected to each other so your workstations can talk to the domain and the DHCP server. I suggest you talk to someone with networking expertise and get some help configuring your switches appropriately.
