Override is not working when targeted to a group
Hi all, I have an issue I can't really figure out. Case: I want to target a rule to a specific set of servers because there's an app running on these machines which require special rules. I've followed the following procedure to target a rule just to these 2 machines. I've created a group, populated it with the 2 servers as explicit members and configured the override: http://blogs.technet.com/b/smsandmom/archive/2007/11/29/opsmgr-2007-monitor-or-rule-targeted-at-computer-group-does-not-generate-alerts.aspx However if I test the event I generated is not picked up by SCOM. If I make the override to a specific object and give the servername all is working well. I do like to work with server groups because this dramatically improves the manageability of my environment. Is there something I'm missing here? It's doing common things uncommonly well that brings succes.

What is ur target of the rule? you might target a class that doesnt have a relationship to a computer and therefor fails with the override. The specific object might be another class then windows computer. it just shows the name of the computer. Rob Korving http://jama00.wordpress.com/

I'm targetting Windows 2003 computer and am sure that the instance is member of the class. It's doing common things uncommonly well that brings succes.

If I make the override to a specific object and give the servername all is working well. Are you actually selecting a computer object? I assume your target is not rolling up to a computer object and therefor not being overridden by the group selection (assuming you actually see the servers when viewing the group members). It looks like Rob is right :) Target your rules to the computer class (target to the computer class, disable by default, override it with a computer group to enable the rule for a specific set of computers).Regards, Marc Klaver http://jama00.wordpress.com/

I'm selecting the computer object (the icon with the win logo). If I target to the group it's not working. So as a workaround I targeted to the computer objects and that's working. Your correct with your last sentence but this is actually what is not working...It's doing common things uncommonly well that brings succes.

Hi Dieter Could you clarify the icon as there are a couple which are very similar. Is it the full windows logo? This is windows computer 2000X operating system class. This is different from the computer class. The computer object has the server icon (but it does have a mini windows logo at the bottom right). Scope for windows computer when adding objects to the group. Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

You can't target a group for a rule/monitor. There are 2 ways to attack this problem: Create your own class in the authoring console and then target the rule at this new custom class. Target the rule at Windows Server or some similar class, with the rule disabled by default. Then, override it to enabled for just the group of 2 computers."Fear disturbs your concentration"

After a further inspection I've rebooted bot my nodes of the RMS cluster and it started working again. I monitored the eventlog and no errors came up anymore. Thanks for answering my question. It's doing common things uncommonly well that brings succes.
