Outlook 2010 slow to respond after period of inactivity

Hello there,

I and a few of my colleagues seem to have an issue with Outlook 2010 whereby if we leave it inactive for a while and then come back to it, then it comes up and says it is connecting to Microsoft exchange and then seems to hang there for a while before proceeding. I find this happens if I leave it and then try to reply to a mail. It hangs when I click send.

I have opened my connections for Outlook and seen that I have 2 Directory connections and 2 Mail connections. When this hanging happens the Directory services show and re-connecting. The Mail connections stay as established.

I have tried disabling and re-enabling Encryption of data between Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange. But it happens in both scenario's. I have removed all PST files and also ensured that I have as minimal e-mails in my mailbox as possible. I have also tried to re-create the mail profile, but it still happens even then.

Exchange is running Version 14.3.195 and Outlook is running with all the latest windows updates and Office service packs applied.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your mailbox is in Office 365 then try the option as specified by https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2847916

Hi,

Please run Send/Receice on Outlook and confirm if there is any error in the results. Please provide the details here for further troubleshooting.

Hi there,

I will try do as you say. When I left if for a bit and then tried Send/Receive it didn't present me with any errors. Just seemed to hang Outlook for a little bit. Looking at the connection status window, which was off to the side I could see the Directory connection change from Established to connecting and then when it was established it all sprang back to life.

I will advise my colleagues to Send/Recieve first and see if we can see any errors in the results. Though looking at mine there were no errors, just this hanging while the Directory connection re-establishes.

I did as you suggested this morning and clicked on Send/Receive. Nothing happened. If it Looked on Show progress it just said Tasks completed.

If I then tried to send a mail and looked at the progress it said Preparing to send mail. At that time it went slow and the Directory service re-connected. Session type for that one is Foreground if that helps at all.
