Operations Manager 2012 eval to retail conversion / Network device monitoring
I will try explain this the best I can... I recently upgraded my Operations Manager 2007 R2 environment to OpsMgr 2012. However, I used the OpsMgr 2012 media available from my TechNet account, not realizing that it is an "EVAL" version. I have since converted the product key to our corporate MSVL RETAIL key, using the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2699998. I updated both management servers (I only have two) and now everything appears to be running RETAIL. The problem: I have started looking at Network Device monitoring capabilities of OpsMgr 2012. I have added a couple devices (switches) to be monitored. However, they are only showing under "Network Devices" in Monitoring view. They are not showing up under "Switches". These are newer devices, running a newer version of IOS. The description field returns "Cisco IOS Software, C3560C Software (C3560c405ex-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2(55)EX2". The Model and Vendor properties are not returning from the SNMP queries. All other information is coming back from the SNMP query and the devices show up as OK. From what I understand, which I may be incorrect, the evaluation version of OpsMgr 2012 will not "monitor the network", using the builtin MIBs. The EVAL will only function the same as 2007 R2 when it comes to Network Devices. Is there some possibility that something is still EVAL because of the mistake I made when installing 2012 and converting the license key to RETAIL later? I really want to check out the network device monitoring, but right now it is pretty much useless. Thanks. EDIT: I verified that other information is coming into OpsMgr from SNMP queries. Ports are being discovered and showing information such as VLAN info, etc. The Model and Vendor information is still not coming back.

Hi It sounds like they are not certified devices - only certified devices get listed as switches or routers. Uncertified devices only get listed under Network Devices. I have a feedback item requesting that this be changed. http://blogs.technet.com/b/jonathanalmquist/archive/2011/08/11/list-of-supported-network-devices-in-operations-manager-2012.aspx From what I understand, which I may be incorrect, the evaluation version of OpsMgr 2012 will not "monitor the network", using the builtin MIBs. The EVAL will only function the same as 2007 R2 when it comes to Network Devices. - This is not correct. The eval and the licensed version of SCOM 2012 behave in exactly the same way. You are awesome. Thank you. I am going to find out the model numbers of the devices from my networking guys and check them against the list of certified devices. I follow up if that is the issue. Update: The devices I added were not in the list. I added a Cisco 4500 and it shows up properly. Thanks again!

The list is not updated from July 2011 :( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26831 At MMS2012 it was told by Microsoft that there are more network devices with Extended Monitoring Capability in SCOM 2012 now than in this list. Waiting, waiting, waiting... And playing with network devices in SCOM2012... Natalya

Just an FYI that non-certified devices can be monitored... I just discovered that all the ports on non-certified devices are showing up in my OpsMgr console. The uplink port on one of those non-certified switches also shows up as Healthy state. That uplink port is plugged into another non-certified switch that I also added to OpsMgr. So it looks like non-certified devices can be monitored.
