OneDrive on External Drive - SP3

Hi there,

I have a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10 build 10130. Using the initial OneDrive wizard, I've moved my OneDrive folder to an external 2Tb drive (I like to sync a large volume of my photos which far exceeds the 128Gb internal SSD!). So far so good - everything syncs like a charm.

If I disconnect the external drive and try to access anything in my OneDrive folder (or even open an Explorer window which has a OneDrive shortcut in it), I can an error message stating that "my OneDrive location cannot be found... if it's an external drive it may have been disconnected" - or words to that effect. Again, fine - I expected the behaviour.

The issue I have is that the OneDrive wizard then launches again and asks me to configure OneDrive. I can cancel it, but if I do - OneDrive seems to 'forget' about being synced to the external drive i.e. next time I connect the drive, it doesn't start to sync. OneDrive is effectively, back to 'new user' status and is not configured.

So the question in summary - is there anyway to prevent OneDrive 'losing' it's configuration is the configured folder is not available? The behaviour I want is that if the drive is disconnected, I can't access local OneDrive files (and get an error message - that's fine). When I connect the drive, I'd like everything to resume as normal.

TIA

Hi,

In Windows 10, if you are moving OneDrive folder to a external hard drive, you will have to connect it every time you want to access and give it some time to sync.

Try this:

1. Close OneDrive application.

2.Delete OneDrive folder.

3.Open OneDrive application.

4.You will get a prompt about not being able to access the onedrive folder.

5.It will ask you to set up onedrive, now allowing you to select your external drive.

Thanks for the reply.

That doesn't really make sense if I'm honest (and why would I delete the OneDrive folder - that would mean 200Gb+ needs to re-sync every time!!).

I appreciate that if I want to sync my files, the drive needs to be connected and I'll need to give it time to reconcile any changes. Surely the behaviour should be:

- is drive connected? Yes. Sync files.

- is drive connected? No. Warn user (display prompt). Pause syncing.

- has drive been reconnected? Yes. Resume sync.

What actually happens is that in the second scenario:

- is drive connected? No. Warn user. Start OneDrive initial setup again. That bit seems wrong.

There must be a better way?

Hi

So far, in Windows 10, if you are moving OneDrive folder to a external hard drive, you will have to connect it every time you want to access and give it some time to sync.

I suggest you submit this feedback via the built-in Feedback App. Maybe it would be improved in later release.
