• When editing word documents in word.exe 2010/2013 the format, tabbing, and layout is correct

  When editing in Word web app the tabbing and layout changes and is no longer correct.

  using sharepoint 2013 sp1 with office web apps 2013 sp1

  edit with word 2010 and 2013 with no issues

  when in sharepoint and using word web app to edit the document is reformat and incorrect

  when viewing in a document in word web app the document looks correct, it only changes when you edit in word web app

What formatting is being broken? Does it break everything or just one/some documents? It's most probably a failure to handle something in the web app that the desktop app is more capable of handling. Are you using .docx files?

Are you using a font that is not available in Office Web Apps?

When you edit a document in Word Online, the document is presented in Editing view so that you can edit and format text. Editing view doesnt show page formatting, such as margins or page breaks, cover pages, or headers and footers. Additionally, many kinds of objects are displayed as placeholders.
