OSD to VMWare machines
We have SCCM 2007 SP2. Our target machines are VMWare Windows XP machines. No matter what we've tried every time we push a Windows 7 image to our VMWare machines they reboot and have a BOOTMGR is missing error. Are there certain drivers you need to incorporate into your SCCM\Task Sequence to account for a Virtual Machine? This are vSphere 4.1 created machines. Thank you. mqh7

Have you added the VMWare mass storage drivers into your process. VMWare uses SCSI drives exclusively (to my knowledge) which are completely unknown to XP.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

our fellow MVP Kenny has a nice blog about this - http://scug.be/blogs/sccm/archive/2010/02/03/sccm-deploying-windows-7-on-a-vmware-esx-environment-howto.aspx My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Okay, I have downloaded the following drivers for the VM SCSI driver http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/scsi_dt_server_wkst_ace/dHdiQGh3YiVq I added the drivers to SCCM and I created a driver package. Then, in my task sequence I added a new step "add\drivers\apply driver package". I point it to my driver files and the Task Sequence tool reads it. It populates the driver field with "VMWare SCSI Controller". So I check the box that says "do unattend installation of unsighed drivers on versions of Windows where this is allowed" I have put this step right after "restart in WindowsPE". When I do this the target XP machines reboots and comes back to XP. I have put this step right after Partition Disk 0. When I do this (or I put it anyplace else) the target machine reboots and comes back to a BOOTMGR is missing error. So no matter what I've tried I can't install Windows 7 onto a VMware machine. This is getting beyond frustrating :-( mqh7

did you look at the vmware specific settings (for the vmware virtual machines) for the scsi controller (hard disc controller) that are shown in kenny's blog ? they are different for both xp and win7 My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

The driver management steps need to be in the TS after you have applied the image, but before the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr step. It needs to be after you have applied the image to disk and before you ru nthe setup windows and configmgr step. It's typically after apply network settings and apply windows settings as well. You are putting in an incorrect location. There should already be a default Apply Device Drivers step, just place your new driver package right next to that one. Here are a ton of posts on Driver Management: http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/cnackers/archive/tags/Driver+Management/default.aspx Here is a post specific to XP and MSD: http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/cnackers/archive/2009/08/12/configmgr-dealing-with-windows-xp-mass-storage-drivers.aspx My blog: http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/cnackers/default.aspx
