OSD of XP SP3 failing on drivers for IDE controller
Hi, We are trying to do an OSD of XP SP3 to a HP DC7900. From the SMSTS log, it is able to access the driver package and is sucessfully setting up some drivers. It continually fails on the setup of the IDE drivers (among some others). After it believes it has installed all drivers the TS gets to the point where it wants to reboot. The computer then attempts to boot off the hard drive and fails. It trys to boot again and you get the screen "Windows did not start sucessfully", and you get the options to boot into Safe Mode etc - none of which will boot the computer. We believe we have downloaded all drivers for the model of computer, including storage drivers. These have been added to the driver package, and we have updated the distribution point for the driver package (confirmed by looking at the messages for the driver package). How else do we diagnose what is going on here? Some lines from the log (seems to be allot of this failing to find a driver for x hardware, ranks possible drivers for it, and then says it has some other driver already installed??): Failed to find a suitable device driver for device 'IDE Controller'. Will do. We are using the auto-assign driver feature. Regards, Richard

Thanks to Johan's help, doing the Apply Driver Package step (since we are trying to deploy XP) got rid of the hardware errors we were seeing in the log file. However the computer still does not boot off the HDD after the "setup windows and configmgr" step. There still must be something wrong with the drivers, but it is hard to know what if I don't see any hardware (or other) errors in the log file. Will keep trying to see what I can come up with. Thanks, Richard

i've solved that problem in the past by fooling with the HDD drive settings in the BIOS. yes you take a performance hit depending on the setting but you may be able to get it up and running for now until you figure out the driver deal.

Ok, turns out for the type of computer we were trying to deploy XP to, a HP DC7900, we did not have the correct drivers for the hard drive imported and available in SCCM. We had to import the AHCI drivers (see the HP download page for the model), add them to a driver package (which did have the drivers for all of the other hardware for this model of computer, just not the HDD as it turned out), and updated the distribution point. Then in the task sequence editor for this deployment, we had to use apply driver package and select our driver package for this model (not using auto apply drivers, as we are deploying to XP - a "legacy" OS). Also we ticked the "Select the mass storage driver within the package that needs to be installed before setup on Pre-Vista operating systems" tickbox. We selected the driver (in this case, "Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller", the first one in the drop down box) and the model (again in our case is was "Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller"). We also had the "Do unattended installation..." tickbox ticked as well, not sure if we had to or not. End result was that it would finally work as expected and boot of the HDD now to finish the deployment. Thanks to Johan for his help. Regards, Richard

We are having the same problem as above with an HP 8000 Elite SFF. What is the proper Intel Sata AHCI driver for installing XP on this model? The driver provided by HP results in a blue screen when I use it with SCCM. Regards, Cor

We found the right SATA driver for the HP 8000. Use driver "Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller" and model "Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller". Driver version 8.9.0.1023, 4-6-2009.

For anyone trying to deploy the sata drivers for the 8200 using this information above, I'd just like to say I tried the "Intel(R) Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller" and I couldn't get it to work...
