OSD Requirements
Hi All, I need to know what are the exact requirements on the network for OSD to operate on a LAN as well as over WAN essentially meaning which ports are required and what configuration is required on teh DHCP either Microsoft or Router based. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply Torsten. Really appreciate. To be more specific. In some of the locations, Routers are acting as DHCP Servers so in such a scenario, what values should be added to those routers so that clients can reach the SCCM Server for OSD. Thanks in advance.

It depends on the setup of your ConfigMgr site/hierarchy. Where are a secondary sites, PXE service points, management points, distribution points etc placed. There's definitely no one-fits-all answer.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

Its a small setup with Database Server and SCCM Server (holding PXE Service Point, Management Point and Distribution Point). In other words, there is only one PXE Service point for particular area. So, in this scenario, what information should be provided to router so that it can allow OSD traffic to and fro between clients and SCCM Server. Thanks.

There are IP-helpers needed on routers for PXE functionality. The IP-address used here, is the server which holds the PXE service point role. This is also the recommended way by Microsoft here. More information can be found in the following posts: How to configure PXE in SCCM http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/8677d9f3-ea24-4586-94b3-80eda4bb8a18/ SCCM PXE and DHCP Related Query http://ctp.social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/configmgrosd/thread/a59b9528-93ee-4d1c-9dae-f40b4b071216 My ConfigMgr blog: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com Follow me on Twitter: @henkhoogendoorn

Thanks for the replies. I have little confusion, kindly, clarify. On the same subnet, nothing is required on any of the network devices or network services to make OSD work other than opening ports 67, 68, 69 and 4011? Correct me if I am wrong? On the different subnet, we need inter VLAN routing and other than that if clients are getting IP Addresses from their localized DHCP Server either Microsoft based or Device based then we need to specify IP helper address of SCCM Site Server against UDP ports 66 and 67? Correct me If I am wrong?

Hello Everyone, I am reposting my questions again. On the different subnet, we need inter VLAN routing and other than that if clients are getting IP Addresses from their localized DHCP Server either Microsoft based or Device based then we need to specify IP helper address of SCCM Site Server against UDP port 66 and boot file name against UDP Port 67? 1) When WDS and DHCP not running on the same machine: correct 2) Configure IP Helper Address to the PXE Servicepoint on Routers. No DHCP Options should be necessary...Miguel Rodriguez

Thanks Elmunjo for the response. 1. If it is correct then how does client boots from PXE when it does not have any information about the PXE Server? 2. Would not the boot file name and path be required at the localized DHCP Server either Microsoft or Router for clients to access boot media? Thanks in advance.

1) PXE Request is done via broadcast. If your router does not support Broadcast DHCP requests you need to add an IP Helper Address to the PXE Service Point. Just take a closer look at these articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926172/en-us and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732351(WS.10).aspx 2) no this is supplied by the PXE Service Point Miguel Rodriguez

Thanks for the reply. Few observations. 1- I have not yet tested it, but all the evidence indicate that it would work. 2- I have tested this out and without specifying Boot File Name (Path) and PXE Server, clients cannot boot with PXE. Kindly, share your thoughts.

2- I have tested this out and without specifying Boot File Name (Path) and PXE Server, clients cannot boot with PXE. You have to provide 66 and 67; that's what I've already written at the top of this thread. Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

Torsten, that is essentially what I am saying.

so, did you configure dhcp options 66 & 67 on the dhcp scope for your clients? (options, not ports) or, have you configured ip-helper on the router for client network? Don

Actually, it depends. If client machines are separated from the SCCM Site Server (Network) and are getting IP Address from either Microsoft DHCP or Router, you have to specify options 66 and 67. In routers case, you have specify the ip-helper address of SCCM Site Server as well. Hope this helps.
