OSD Install Updates Offline
I am working with SCCM OSD (MDT is installed) and currently I am struggling with getting Updates installed (Offline or Online). I am pointing my Offline installation to a deployment package that contains all of the necessary updates through the current month. The ZTIPatch log indicates that there is no unattend.xml, but continues to process sucessfully. Patches are not installed. When I log onto the system 40+ patches are downloaded and installed via WU. Ideally, I would like to patch offline and be able to update the deployment package on a monthly basis to make certain the image is up-to-date on patches. I am new at this and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

have you created a Deployment Management task which is targetted to the Deployment Collection you use when creating these computers ? for example, lets say you are deploying Windows Vista and want 40 Windows Vista updates to be made available to the Deploy Windows Vista Collection you adjust the collection TAB of your Deployment Management Task to the Deploy Windows Vista collection and as long as your task sequence has an Install Software Updates section in it, you are good to go, to troubleshoot this verify that all the patches are GREEN *not superseded or expired* in status, and that they apply to the correct OS you are targetting the WUAHANDLER.log and SMSTS.log file will give you some ideas of why its failing cheers niallMy SCCM Guides http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?showforum=44

WOW! Thanks for the quick response. The process you are using requires "Install Software Updates" which is an onlinestep correct? This process is using the SoftwareUpdate Deployment process in SCCM. Is there a way toapply the 40 Windows Vista Updatesoffline? Iknow there is astep foundwith the MDToptions to"Install Updates Offline", but it does nothing when I point it to the deployment package. I must be missing something.

are you adding the offline updates in the state restore section like this screenshot ? http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/uploads/monthly_07_2009/post-1-1246990311.jpg My SCCM Guides http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?showforum=44

Thanks for the the great info...When I talk about on-line, I am talking about the system being booted into the OS not the PE boot image. I tried to enable the step to "Install Software Updates" when booted in the boot image and OOPS the logs indicated the system had to be booted into the OS. (Learning as I go :)) I am looking at the difference between these 2 steps: Open Task Sequence Editor: Click-Add-General-Install Software Updates (This is the method that requires that the OS be fully initialized before it will run. Based on my understanding, this step will use the SCCM Software Update Deployment process as you explained. ???)orClick-Add-MDT-Install Updates Offline (This is the step in which just a Deployment Package is selected. This is the step I cannot get to work.)Thank you so much for hanging with me on this. I really appreciate your help.

No I'm sorry I missed the 2nd reply. I have located the "Install Updates Offline" in a Post Install group after the "setup windows and config manager" step. (Ideally, I would like this step to run after OF2K7 is installed to pick up those updates also. But for now, I would like to get the OS patches to run.) Thanks

can you try putting it in State Restore instead, like in my screenshot ? does it work then ? the restart is needed after the configmgr setup and configuration.. My SCCM Guides http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?showforum=44

Have you got a solution for this problem AnnDC ? you didn't post anything more, but i think i have the same problem now. i want to make a task sequence media (dvd) for an offline OSD including all necessary windows updates, but the task sequence always fails when doing the step "install software updates offline"...

As discussed in my thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/0d5bd9e0-f9cf-4e06-a603-7a1311929e0a/e28cdc0c-de86-41ea-a0b0-ee860a8ecd40/reply I'm having this same problem. Is this a bug or has anyone managed to actually get this working? If so, please elaborate on what steps were required.
