OSD Failure - Installs base image, but not applications
Hello, I'm facing a weird situation, one with which I've been grappling for a few months now. It's been leading me to despair. I've got a SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 setup. I'm reimaging machines with Windows XP (I'm about to move to Windows 7, but I want to be fully confident in Windows XP deployment - which I'm not). I'm using a MDT TS which sometimes (but only sometimes) fails right after Use Toolkit Package. The next step is Install Software Updates (which is set to Mandatory). I've got a bunch of Dell models (both workstations and notebooks): D620, D630, E6400, E6410, Optiplex 620, Optiplex 740, 755, 760, 780 etc. The weidest part is this: most of the time the reimage works flawlessly. I've been combing through logs both on the server and on the client. I've found a few issues, fixed them, but the problem still persists. I must be missing something but I need some help at this point, it's the sane thing to do. Anyone has any ideas?

Is the task sequence always failing at the same spot? Are these "known" SCCM clients or unknown computers? Install Software Updates can be flakey sometimes, so it might be worth disabling that step and doing some testing. Post a sanitized version of the relevant portion of your smsts.log file, which should be helpful in determining root cause. The Use toolkit step picks up stuff from the DP as the first step after the mini setup, so it might be problems with NIC driver on certain models.. try F8 when the error occurs and check if you have network connectivityMichael Petersen My Deployment Blog - http://blog.coretech.dk/mip

@Michael Petersen: The thing is that the issue comes up on any model, even though it usually works on that particular model. So I don't think it's a problem with the NIC drivers or the network connectivity. @Trevor Sullivan: Yes. From my experience the TS fails to install the updates everytime. At the last occurence I saw in the report of the active TSs that the step with Use Toolkit Package completed succesfully. So my problem has to be with Install Software Updates. I'm starting to suspect a GPO that messes something up (I'm thinking about the old WSUS server that SCCM replaced). Maybe I've still got a GPO that's pointing towards that somehow. I'll set up a few tests today related to this.
