Number of Updates vs Length of Maintenance Window

Hi all,

just a quick question. If an SCCM 2012 client looks at the list of available patches and figures out the install time (say 600 minutes) would the fact that the Maintenance Window is shorter (e.g. only 400 minutes) be enough to stop all the updates from getting installed? Or would the client simply install as many as it could in that window and then wait until the next Maintenance Window rolls round to install any remaining updates?

I've read a few blog posts and forum threads on this issue but there seem to be a few different opinions out there :)

It's calculated per update. For a nice explanation see this (older) blog post: http://blogs.technet.com/b/csloyan/archive/2010/10/24/maintenance-window-calculations-explained.aspx

Here's another recent blog with a nice summary (it references the blog linked by Peter above): http://blogs.technet.com/b/charlesa_us/archive/2015/04/21/system-center-configuration-manager-2012-maintenance-windows-getting-to-know-you.aspx
