Hi coolbudy ,

  1.  The prompt for Read Only/edit  is governed by an IE add-on called SharePoint Open Documents Class. Please disable and re-enable it to check the result:   Internet Explorer --> Tools -->Manage Add-ons --> disable Sharepoint Opening Documents control (controls by selecting currently loaded add-ins from left pane dropdown menu) controls, close and re-open the Internet explorer and then enable it again.
  2. If you have added your web site to trust sites in Internet Explorer, there will no prompt when click the document link and it opens as read-only mode. So please remove  the URL of the SharePoint site from Internet Explorer trusted sites if it exists there.
  3. Clear all Temp Files from the path:      C:\Users\login_user_name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache
  4. Check your Security program of your environment, someone once met the same issue duo to anti-virus program.
