Not always prompted for read-only or EDIT mode, when opening files with IE7, Sharepoint 3.0
Hello Everyone, We use Sharepoint 3.0 and when I click on a document I get a pop up prompt that asks me whether I want to open the file in READ-ONLY or EDIT mode. I use a machine with XP Pro that is running IE7. A user called me today, also running IE7, and when he clicks to open a Sharepoint file he gets a different prompt - a simpler one that just offers OPEN or SAVE. I don't care that his prompt looks different - the problem is that he is able to open the file, make edits, but then when he closes the file (using Excel) he isn't able to save his changes. Excel only provides a save-as option for him. This isn't a permission problem with his ID. When I login to our Sharepoint 3.0 system as him, with his password (from my machine), I get the usual Read-Only / Edit prompt and when I open a file in EDIT mode I am able to save my changes with no problem. Any thoughts on this? Chris

This was a while ago. The problem was that the user had Office 2000 on their computer. You must have Office 2003 or later in order to use the EDIT feature in WSS 3.0. Chris

Weel I have the same problem with office 2003. I really can't figure it out. Some of my users have the popup asking them if they wan't read-only or checkout and edit. I would like every user to have this. Because otherwise they need to checkout the document in the drop down menu and then click on it.

Check to see if there is any difference in the version of MS-Office with the users that don't get the EDIT option. Also make sure they are using IE7.

You get that prompt when you have any of the Office 2007 apps, such as InfoPath 2007, installed.

this is an IE setting, try Trusted Zone vs. Intranet Zone.

I am having the same problem running XP Pro, Office 2003 and WSS 3.0 on both workstations. On workstation #1 (Local Intranet), I get the Edit or Read-Only prompt no problem. On workstation #2 (Local Intranet), I geta warning prompt, "Some files can harm your computer...", click on OK and it goes straight to Read-Only mode.I tried the suggestion of using Trusted Zone vs Local Intranet... On workstation #1 under the Trusted Zone setting, I no longer get the Edit or Read-Only option prompt but just the warning and it opens the file in Read-Only.On workstation #2 under the Trusted Zone setting, no effect just the warning and it opens the file in Read-Only.I changed it back to Local Intranet for both workstations and no effect... they both acting differently again. I want both workstations to prompt for Edit or Read-Only.

Hey everyone,Just wanted to add that we have had a lot of issues with Edit/Read Only popup (our users really needed it) and it turns out that the specific component you need to get the dialog is the "Office Tools" > "Windows SharePoint Services Support" component in any Office 2007 app. This component adds about 5 files to your Office12 folder, one being the owssupp.dll activeX component which seems to give you this dialog. Unfortunately, and as far as we could tell, the DLL can't be installed through regsvr32 so you have to use the installer for your Office 2007 app. You can install this component without any others and since we're running Office 2003 under Office 2007 licenses and the "downgrade" policy, that was how we took care of it. If you don't have an Office 2007 license, you can probably buy something like Visio, OneNote or InfoPath 2007 and just install this component. Hope this helps.N

Hello everyone, I had a user who would check out a file, but when he opened it in word 2003, it would always be in read only mode. It would be fine on other comoputers. We figured it was a chche problem since he had opened that same file in read only mode that day. So we cleared the cache and rebooted and it worked.I am going to watch and see if ithappens again and try to figure outwhat caused this issue. Thanks, Sabin

Ran into this problem with one user who got his machine reimaged. Fixed by Add/Remove Programs --> Office 2007 Pro --> Repair.

I know this problem has been out here a while, but thought I'd provide an answer in case anyone is still looking. We are using Windows XP Professional with MS Office 2003. I solved this problem by having users install the free version of SharePoint Designer 2007 on their computers. It seemed to download all the needed files and enabled users to select an option to check out and edit the document or only open the document as a read only. I hope this helps someone.
