Not able to open document directly from document library alert
I have an alert setup on a document library. When a new .docx file is posted I get an alert that has 4 links up top, this is all OOTB. One to modify my alert settings, one to view the document (linked directly to .docx file), one the library, and one the mobile view. Clicking on the link directly to the .docx file ends in failure. Kicks you over to a page not found. I thought maybe it was a server mime type issue and changed the .docx. mime type to application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document, but that doesn't seem to fix it. The document is there and the link is correct. Any ideas?

Have you defined any alternate access mappings? Also, can you add to your trusted sites. Can you browse to document using the same url? V

No AAM's defined. The main URL is in my trusted sites. If I browse to the document library and click on the .docx file it will open as it should. It's just an issue clicking the link from the alert.

Try this. On the IE - > tools = Internet Options -> Advanced Options -> Advanced tab -> click Restore defaults button -> click ok to finish. V

No luck there. Same thing, end up on a page cannot be found.

Alright, I feel like a moron. The problem is this.... Someone goes to the library and hits upload menu. They select a word document and upload. After the upload they are redirected to the editform page because there are some custom metadata columns. At that point they change the title of the document, fill in the other metadata and click OK. The initial upload prompts an alert to be sent out with a link to the document as named when uploaded. Then another alert is sent out after the metadata has been saved. At this point the document has a new name and a different link so the first link results in a page not found. Is there a way to only send an alert after the metadata is filled out? This would also help reduce the number of emails from 2 to 1 per document. I'm sure it's frustrating receiving 2 alerts per document.
