I'm wondering if you already had a MOSS 2007 Enterprise installation but didn't know it.
(Idea comes from "already exists under the parent ")

Easy test.....try and enable enterprise features. If it works, you have enterprise already.

Yes and No.
Although it's difficult to find these days, there once was a download of a Trial edition and when that was installed it was possible to decide between Standard and Enterprise.
However the trial period would have expired a long time ago if the Trial edition was downloaded and immediately installed, so this objection is only if the trial file was downloaded but then saved for a year or two before being used.
Not therefore too likely.SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links):

Central Administration > Operations > Timer Job Definitions >Removed Trial Conversion Job
Restarted the WSS Timer service (In the Services MMC)
Restarted IIS
Ran configuration wizard again.
Central Administration > Operations > Convert License Type
And it worked !!!
