Nonexistent file is checked out or locked for editing when uploading an image.
We built a site on a development server and used stsadm -o backup and -o restore to move it to a server on a client's site. The environment is MOSS 2007 Enterprise on Win2008 R2. Our freelance developer had uploaded some images on the dev machine, but not checked them in, so it seems they weren't included in the backup. Unfortunately the client server won't allow us to upload the image as it says the file is checked out or locked for editing by SIGNOFF\Administrator (a local account on the dev machine). The image is not visible in the web view, explorer, SharePoint Manager 2007 or SharePoint Designer. Trying to copy the file using Explorer brings up a generic "An error occurred..." message. We could change the names of the images, upload the renamed files and then trawl through the site changing every instance, but it's less than ideal. Surely there has to be a workaround of some sort.

I managed to track down the image name in the LeafName column of the allDocs table, and in the tp_LeafName column of AllUserData. Deleting the row in the two tables allowed me to upload the image successfully. It's a better option than editing all the links pointing to the image in the entire site. Hope this helps someone else.
