No password reset in the Portal?
Why isn't there a password reset in the portal? This is a HUGE mistake on Microsoft's side. If this is supposed to be filled with self-service functionality, I think you missed the most important one. Many companies have users that don't have company supplied computers and can't install the password plug in on their computers, so how can they change their passwords? Just about every product I have reviewed has this functionality out of the box, except FIM.

I know that there is Password Reset but where is Password Change?

Sorry, my bad. We got our wires crossed (I'm working with the Opper) . The password reset portal is there but isn't supported in the extranet, a known limit of the feature at the moment.CraigMartin Oxford Computer Group http://identitytrench.com

Thank you for the correction Craig. Let me rephrase this, I don't see why Microsoft would make the assumption that every user would have a computer that is a member of the domain in order to change their password.

I'm also wondering about this and thinking what needs to be done to achieve this. Maybe developing a custom workflow activity to reset password. Not sure about how to trigger the workflow activity in a correct way either. Maybe creating a new type of "resource" and let user create the "resource" and then trigger the workflow.Frank

Hi all, We understand that the non domain joined user would also like to reset their password without installing the client components. We are looking to provide a solution to this scenario, but it will be after the release of FIM 2010. As soon as we have more details to share, we will. Also, I'd love to hear feedback on other end user scenarios you'd like to see fulfilled by FIM, password reset or otherwise. Thanks,Alym MicrosoftAlym Rayani

That's good news, thanks, Alym. How about password reset for Mac/Linux and Safari/Firefox users too? In Higher Education especially many students bring their own hardware but their IT guys want to give them ability to reset their AD password via FIM.Dave Nesbitt | Architect | Oxford Computer Group

Cross-browser and cross-OS password reset support would be the best & coolest feature ever...Paolo Tedesco - http://espace.cern.ch/idm

Hi Dave/Paolo,We are reviewing those scenarios as well. We haven't made a public statement about that, but I'm definitely looking at the higher education scenario so it's on my radar. Thanks!AlymAlym Rayani

i just wanted to add up to the limitation to the password reset functionality as per my organisational requirement. Users travelling with company laptop which is connected to AD but since is not public, user would not be able to reset thier password until they have portal for password reset or connection to AD with VPN. Somehow it seems to me that one should be able to install the client on ISA and then publish the site out and have users able to access the site from their non-domain joined systems. I can't help thinking this will work if requests appear to come from ISA and ISA is joined to the domain and has the client installed. Think I will try to set this up in my home lab and see if I can get it working.I'll post back and let you know if I can get around the issue.Chris

This is an interesting line of questioning. It is squarely on my plate as well! I administer a hosted Sharepoint Portal running AD for authentication. My user base is spread throughout the country and a couple other countries as well. We do not use authenticated computers are member of the domain. I have not found an OOTB password change function in our deployment. I have to have this function as I work in an IT company. I am looking at third-party solutions to meet this need but I have an entire company of open source programmers that I have to justify the expenditure to. Can someone please tell me why MS left this out as an out of the box capability? I understand that many deployments have unique authentication issues but this is a serious issue for those of use that are not using unique authentication hybrids.Perhaps I am missing something?

FIM 2010 is a v1 product and might not have all the features you want. We are understand there is a huge depands for a client-less/web-based solution and we are seriously looking into different approaches to this.

Any updates on a "client less" password reset? The Kiosk portion seems to work, but a portal that doesnt require the client to allow for the following would serve the FIM product line and help to drive SALES! 1. Web portal that doesn't require a client - ( A java app? or?) 2. Retrive your user name via SS# or Emp/Student ID # or some other form ThanksSscribner

nothing official yet. Product group is looking into this popular request. We are still in the planning phase of FP1 and will definitely let everyone knows once we have a commitment.
April 22nd, 2010 5:53pm

Is there an ETA on FP1 and is there a likelihood that a self-service password reset web portal will be available in FP1? I'm in Higher Ed and also have a huge need for that feature. In fact, it's the primary feature for us as a need for current/prospective students and we won't purchase a product that doesn't have this feature.

I'm in Higher Ed and need the self-service password reset web portal feature for students if we want to replace our current identity management product. Any ETA on this yet? Thanks

Hi Liem (and others who have inquired about this feature), Thanks for all the great feedback. We certainly have a feel for how important customers believe this feature is. While I don't have an ETA for the next version of FIM, I can tell you that web based password reset is one of our top scenarios and we've been actively investigating it. We see three core requirements from all the great feedback so far: The solution must be entirely browser based, no binaries are necessary for the end user’s machine The device will not need to be domain joined The solution should be browser independent As we are conducting our investigation, we welcome additional feedback and conversations around this functionality. Thanks, Alym Alym Rayani

Sounds good Alym. I'm working on a FIM solution for a large enterprise that has many desktops accessed via a Citrix client, so there is no way to use the current integrated features. We need a browser based solution like everyone else. Hopefully there's a difference between password reset and change. I wouldn't want people to have to reset (i.e. enter secret questions + answers) just to change their password, they should be able to put in the current password and then change to a new one, just as you can on a windows desktop.
