No Access to Top-Level Site
So I got an call from a user saying they could not access the intranet amymore. All autheniticated users were no longer able to access the site. I am the site collection admin and still have access. Also, I added a user to the site collection admins and tested with success. Im noticing when I go to add the users back and the drop down that says Give Permission and you can either add them to a group or give them permissions directly. When I select the drop down to select a group all of them say [No Access] next to the group. I.E. Designers [no access], Intranet members [no access] I did not change anything as far as permissions go and I am the only one with ability to do so. Any recommendations? I have deleted all the users and tried re-adding with no success. I checked in central management - application management and made sure windows authentication was configured properly and it is. I also tried doing an iisreset and reboot. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance Jerry Kane

Well, what do you see when you go to the Groups page of your permissions? Do you see Groups? What abut when you go to the Site Permissions tab (Site Settings > Advanced Permissions)? Do your groups exist at the top level still? Do they have permissions assigned still? Also, go to Central Admin and check Web Application Policy to ensure nothing has been changed there, because those settings override everything in the site collection. My guess is somebody blew your groups away.SharePoint Architect || My Blog

Only a few people have access to the sites and they are only contributors at that. Im not sure how they could of blown the groups away but something weird happened. I figured it out how to make it work though. I went and removed all permissons on all sites and set the permissions at the top-level then re-inherited them (is that a word) and it worked. I have a feeling it was a list that was screwed up as far as permissions. I dont have a definitive answer as to why it happened. All I know is that redoing all the permissions worked. Thanks for the advice!
