Newbie question about backup personal sites in SharePoint 2007
I am a new SharePOint User. NO experience at all. Recently I was given the task to make backups for personal sites from users that had left the company. I have been trying to research over the Internet but what I found is to vast and generic.. I usually get redirected to the same sites which explain how to make backup from site colletions not personal sites. I am more confused then when I started. Please help. AlexAlex Alas

Hi Alex, Well I do not have the Administrative Capabilities to actually test this, but this seems like what you need. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-designer-help/back-up-restore-or-move-a-sharepoint-site-HA010069939.aspx I am requesting permissions for that right now and will be able to confirm later. Let me know if you had already came across this site or not. Edit: Ok to do backups make sure you have Sharepoint Designer installed. From there you want to file>Open Site.>Yoursite. After you have the site open click the top menu button "Site">"Administrative">Backup Then you should be good. Brandon

Hi, What do you mean by personal site? If it were My Site, we can only back up all My Site. There are three methods for backing up my sites: Back up the my sites SSPBack up the my sites content database We recommend that you host My Sites on a separate Web application. Accordingly, you can back up the content database associated with the My Sites Web application separately from other components in the SSP. This method helps protect the My Sites content from a database server failure.Back up the my sites site collection http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc713516(v=office.12).aspx Thanks, Rock Wang Forum Support Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help. Steven, Thanks for letting me know SP Designer is free. I did not know that fact. I already installed it on my machine and I can start testing Brandon's suggestion. Thanks for your input. Alex Alas

Thank you Rock and Brandon for your help, Rock, I am reading through the suggested documentation. What I meant with personal sites is what you refer as "My site" for users that had left the company. BEsides using SharePoint Designer is there other way to backup single "my sites" and not all of them at once? Brandon, I reviewed the link you suggested above but I was not able to test it because we only have one license for SharePoint designer licensed copy and is being installed and in use by our developer. I was trying to find a way to get around that limitation so I won't have to install the applicaiton on other machines in order to backup those user's My sites. Alex Alas

SharePoint designer is free, so you can give it to as many people as you need too.Steven Andrews | SharePoint Professional | http://www.twitter.com/backpackerd00d | https://baron72.wordpress.com/
