New monitor produces closure email, but now new
I created a new monitor which connects to the windows performance counters on a machine and puts up an alert when the cpu is at 80% usage. I log onto the server and put some load on it.... i leave it for a while. I take the load off and i get a "closure" email for my monitor, but not a "new" alert. I assumed it was a subscription problem, so i created a very basic subscription: Enabled "raised by any instance in a specified group" selected my group Enabled "created by specific rule or monitor" and selected my monitor. Enabled "with a specific resolution state" new and closed Seems pretty basic to me and not much room for error........ still threw up only a closure email and not a new. Is there a setting in the monitor that would cause this? It is a simple threshold monitor sitting in the "windows server operating system" class. I also tried it in the agent class. thanks

Is it possible that your alert is created and closed relatively fast? It may be that your CPU utilization goes over 80%, alert gets created, then CPU utilization drops below 80%, alert gets auto-resolved (since monitor go green again and after all that notification fires and produces email saying alert is resolved. CPU utilization may be tricky to monitor. I'd recommend looking at several consecutive samples if they all are over 80% then alert. However, again, there is no guarantee that utilization won't drop on the next sample... ----------------- Vitaly Filimonov [MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Hi With notifications, there is a setting for "Aged Events". This option states 'if nothing has changed with this alert in x minutes, send the notification'. So if the monitor auto-resolves within x minutes (state changes) you don't get the "new alert" email. This sounds good. But sadly when the alert auto resolves the same process applies. And of course the alert stays closed for longer than x minutes, so you still get an email that the alert has closed. This sounds like what you are seeing. I will try creating 1 based off of consecutive samples. How often do the samples occure... Is that a separate setting apart from the "interval"? or the same

Have you tried creating a view for closed alerts to confirm that the alert is being created in the first place - if you look at the history of the closed alert I suspect it will say closed by system. You are correct that interval is how often the samples occur .. every 2 minutes \ 5 minutes \ hour depending on the monitorView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/
