New Windows login required after a workstation inactivity period

To synchronize the contacts and messages with my Exchange Server, Windows 10 requires an increase of the work stations security, forcing a new Windows login after a specified inactivity period.

Once the increased security is implemented users can only play with an inactivity period range of 1 to 5 minutes.

In my capacity of Administrator of the network, I would like to be able to increase the value of the inactivity value beyond 5 minutes for those stations that are not exposed to public access, which requires that Microsoft communicate to me the name and address of the Register key which controls the inactivity period after which a new login is required.

I really need that Register key to resolve my problem!

You should be able to create a local policy to override the new settings.   You'll need to run the Group Policy Editor  (gpedit.msc)

It should look like this:

Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried it and it did not change anything at all.

What puzzles me is that even modifying the proper Registry parameters does not change the inactivity value after which the user is required to log anew!

I wish I knew what "enhanced security" does to the stations and where it comes from since it does seem to be from group policies.

Hi,

According to your description, it seems like Screen Save setting problem. Please check it settings and increase the time for test.

Go to Appearance and Personalizations\Screen Save Settings. Adjust wait times as desired

I am afraid that the problem has Nothing to do with Screen Saving but rather with the enforcement of the server Group polices on the stations.

Windows 10 being quite recent not all the Tools are yet available which does make things easier, for instance remote administration was only released en August 25th.

Thanks anyhow for the suggestion.

If you have not done so, take a look into the Power Options in the Control Panel. Select Change plan settings then Change advanced power settings. In the Advanced settings window, you can make further adjustments to your computer. You may want to take a close look in the sections for Hard disk and Sleep. These options will update the registry settings and may resolve the problem that you are experiencing.

I am talking about Windows 10 workstations in a Domain environment, where the new session logon after an inactivity period is required by the server, not by local settings.

If this policy is being created by a Group Policy Object on the server, then we'll need to either: A) modify the existing GPO, or B) create another GPO that will supersede it.

Do you need help editing/creating a GPO?

The problem is that I can modify exiting GPO as much as I want without the slightest impact on the new session login requirement after an inactivity period.

I have not yet found what has priority over GPO setting or Registry entries.

Perhaps we're having a problem with a definition of terms...  what exactly do you mean by "new session login requirement after an inactivity period"?

I had assumed you were originally talking about the length of time... but now I gather your talking about the requirement to enter your credentials?

If so, that feature called "Password protect the screen saver", and is located in the Group Policy editor at User Configuration-> Administrative Templates->Control Panel->Personalization

The involved group policies elements as extracted from sysvol policy #5 "Update ServiceClient ComputerPolicy"are:

29F6C1DB-86DA-48C5-9FDB-F2B67B1F44DA System idle timeout before the system enters a low power state

7bc4a2f9-d8fc-4469-b07b-33eb785aaca0 Idle timeout before the system returns to a low power sleep state after waking unattended

9d7815a6-7ee4-4976e-8888-515a05f02364 System idle timeout before the system enters a low power hibernation state

0e796bdb-100d-47d6-a2d5-f7d2daa51f51 Locks the console when the system wakes from a sleep state

Running GPMC.msc on the server reads them without problem but I cannot run GPMC onn a Windows 10 station because the remote administration tools are not yet available in French and all my stations are in French.

The problem is that I am not able to modify effectively any of those parameters...
