New WSS 3.0 installation - can't access default site on port 80
We've set up a WSS 3.0 farm on a virgin Windows 2003 Server. We can access it without any problems on the admin port (http://sharepoint:32327), but can't access the default site (http://sharepoint). Instead, we get an "Under Construction" message. The Default Website is set up in IIS, on port 80, and is started. Can anyone suggest what to try next?

The Central Admin site is setup automatically during installation. There are a couple potential reasons why you might be seeing the Under Construction page from IIS. You didn't create a Web Application and Site Collection after doing the installation. You created a new Web Application that uses a host header name You didn't choose the default web site when you created the first Web Application By default SharePoint creates a new web site when you create a Web Application. If you don't pick the existing default site in the dropdown then SharePoint will create a site parallel to the default. If you didn't use a host header then IIS will default to the default site, which isn't running SharePoint if you didn't pick it. If you did use a host header then you need to access the site using the host header name, not the server name. So make sure you create a Web Application and Site Collection and make sure that you pick the radio button to use an existing site when you do. The only site available should be the default web site. Or, just create the site with a host header and use that address instead of the default one.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP

> We've set up a WSS 3.0 farm on a virgin Windows 2003 Server. Could you please say why you have just set up WSS 3.0? It's a back product and the replacement product is also free with only one major snag namely that the WSS 3.0 built.in (free) database system allows databases of unrestricted size (and is otherwise better).SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters

Paul, I think your comments apply to MOSS 2007. The WSS 3.0 installation ends with a web site created and in fact when you click finish you are at the default page of the default WSS 3.0 site. It's in MOSS 2007 that you need to manually create a Web Application (etc.) itm2: Look at the older threads with similar issues in this search page http://www.google.com/search?q=Under+Construction+WSS&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8 SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters

I can confirm that we're running WSS 3.0 with SP1 installed (i.e. not MOSS2007), so theoretically we should not have needed to manually create a web application and site collection. From reading the link provided by Mike (thanks) it seems that the service pack may have "broken" our default site. I suppose the next steps are to re-install WITHOUT the SP and see if this solves our problem.

> I suppose the next steps are to re-install WITHOUT the SP and see if this solves our problem. Please let us know, (David HM: I removed your mark as answer because Paul's post contained suggestions that were not valid for a WSS 3.0 installation as I earlier pointed out in the thread. They were valid only for MOSS 2007.)
