New Folder menu issue
Hello. A user just reported that he has not been able to use the "New Folder" menu option in document libraries. Upon further investigation, I found out that not only New Folder, but also anything in the welcome control, such as "Sign in as a Different User". This made me think that there is something wrong with javascript, and I checked all the Zone settings and what's allowed, what's not allowed and set them up to all companywide settings. Also, ran the "Repaired" his office. But nothing worked. Some details: Portal: MOSS 2007 Client browser: Internet Explorer 8 Client software: Microsoft Office 2007 I appreciate any help to guide me resolve this issue. Thank you. Ali.

Hi, I too had faced this issue in my environment and I resolved it by uninstalling the Divx plugin. Check if you have installed something similar or not. Thanks, Rahul Rashu

In regard to the New Folder button not appearing, go to that Library > Library Settings > Advanced settings. Is the option 'Make "New Folder" command available' checked? For the missing options in the welcome bar, what options do you wee when you click on the drop down next to the user's name - or do you see the users's name at all? These options are controlled via the master page, so I also advise checking to see if you are using a custom master page. If so, try temporarily switching to the default master page and see if that makes any difference.Regards, Jerad Plesuk Technical Support | SharePoint Technologies | Microsoft Corporation ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Jerad, May be my question wasn't clear enough. New Folder menu option, and other options under Welcome control is available, does appear, however when the user clicks on nothing happens. IE doesn't even attempt to do anything. Ali.

Javascript is not required for SharePoint, so it should not be that causing a problem. However, does this issue happen on multiple machines and for multiple users (administrator accounts as well)? Also, have you tried with different versions of IE or with different browsers as well? At this point I'd just like to see if the problem can be narrowed down a little bit to something more specific like a client machine or user vs. the entire SharePoint farm.Regards, Jerad Plesuk Technical Support | SharePoint Technologies | Microsoft Corporation ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Hello Jerad. I am suspecting something is up with the client machine, specifically Office - IE integration. Because, I asked client to log on my computer and he was able to use menu options. Also, on client's machine, I installed Chrome browser and the New Folder and any other options was usable. Finally, I have completed Office Diagnostics and Repair on Microsoft Office to see if they help but they didn't. I have not tried any other IE versions as uninstall and reinstall might just mask the sympthoms. And I do not believe this is a farm wide issue, only handfull of people from a pool of 2000 users reported this. Any other ideas to narrow it down?

Thanks for the information. I'd agree it certainly looks like we're dealing with a machine-specific issue at this point. I don't believe this has something to do with the Office integration, but more likely how IE is handling the controls for those buttons. If you login with a different account on the problem machine, does IE work for that user? Also, is the problem user an administrator on the machine (or could you try this with an adminsitrator account)? This may point to a permissions issue with that account if a different user can get this to successfully work on that machine. If any other user can get it to work, and both have adminsitrator permissions, I would then suggest taking a look at domain policies being applied across the two accounts as well and see if there are any that may be affecting IE. Finally, you may also want to download and run ProcMon on the machine while trying this with the problem account. Then, after clicking a button and nothing happens, pause the ProcMon and see if there are any 'Access Denied' entries to registry keys or file locations. Testing these options should help give a better idea if the problem is maybe permissions/account based, or something truly machine-wide. Let me answer in order; -Q:If you login with a different account on the problem machine, does IE work for that user? A:No. I logged on as a farm administrator and controls didn't work for me either. -Q:Is the problem user an administrator on the machine (or could you try this with an adminsitrator account)? A: Problem user is an administrator, but I am not not. However, I am a farm administrator. Both didn't work with IE. -Q:This may point to a permissions issue with that account if a different user can get this to successfully work on that machine. If any other user can get it to work, and both have adminsitrator permissions, I would then suggest taking a look at domain policies being applied across the two accounts as well and see if there are any that may be affecting IE A: If it was permissions issue, how would you explain that Chrome browser worked for the problem user and me? -Q:Suggestion about ProcMon. A:I will try this.

If it were a permissions issue to a key in the registry for Internet Explorer, that would explain why Chrome works and not IE (different registry key). Let me know if you find out anything more running ProcMon.Regards, Jerad Plesuk Technical Support | SharePoint Technologies | Microsoft Corporation ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights
