Nice job! Congratz to you and the team to put it all together! Is there any planning in the near future to publish the documentation in downloadable format? Do you plan on releasing documentation regarding migration from CLM 2007 to FIM 2010?
April 8th, 2010 5:59pm

Is there any planning in the near future to publish the documentation in downloadable format? Thanks, Peter. We haven't seen a requirement to post the information in a downloadable format.I didn't get a single response for the same question regarding the How Do I Guides. So, from our perspective, there is no demand for downloadable content. Since my guides are divided into sub-topics, I do plan to create downloadable Word documents for them. Thanks for the reminder!
April 9th, 2010 1:29am

Your doing a very good job of making this all available, its very usefull for people new to the product like me, who also have no previous ilm experience. If all that documentation would be available in 1 big PDF or word document it would be easier to navigate through all the information, and mabe print it like a big 'FIM basics' book.

That is an interesting idea. We can build documents in groups and typically publish in DOC files. However, there are people working on giving us additional capabilities and I have seen PDFs on the download center. I will pass along this idea. Thanks!

When will this be released as a download? When people travel, internet access isn't always there... Downloadable docs are a must.Joe Stepongzi - Identity Management Consultant - ILM MVP - www.microsoftIdM.com,ilmXframework.codeplex.com

The documentation on the Technet Library is always excellent, BUT, what a lack of functionality to not have it available offline as a download! Microsoft Press may be the reason why, but it certainly isn't difficult to make this content available offline. I've seen requests for YEARS asking for Technet Library information to be downloadable, with silence from Microsoft as a reply. Great content, bad usability. Does anyone know of any software that would be able to copy it - from the topmost entry through the lower links?
April 15th, 2010 12:17pm

This is definitely not related to MS Press. We have in this thread exactly three responses and if you look at this post, zero (!) feedback in conjunction with the required packaging format of the content.Sorry, but to me, this is not exactly an indicator for a high demand that would help me to convince my management from the importance of making the information available in a downloadable format...It is not so much a question of "how difficult" something is - there are associated costs that need to be justified. If you feel strongly about this, you can provide your feedback here.Cheers,MarkusMarkus Vilcinskas, Knowledge Engineer, Microsoft Corporation

My apologies if the response was received as direct criticism of the FIM docs and posting process. I'm excited to read the FIM documentation, and thank all those who have worked so hard to get them delivered. - I have a very difficult time with the documentation process, so am very thankful to those who do it!I took a look at the first link, and added a commment. :)Maybe people don't vote for it because they don't necessarily see it as helpful to them, like they would for a post that effectively answered a question. With 537 views and 3 votes, how does that compare to similar types of posts? This post has 460 views, with 2 votes. The ratios are pretty close...I agree that the costs of the "downloadability" of the content shouldn't be carried by your department. The costs should be spread system wide, where the function of downloadable content is built into the framework of the Technet site.Cheers!Robert

Robert, don't worry - I didn't take it that way.I just wanted to demonstrate "non-silence" from Microsoft :o)Now, seriously, your feedback really helps to make a point and to get something done. The voting option might not be the ideal solution; however, all methods have pros and cons (e.g.: "who wants to take another poll...").I was about to implement an email option - but on the other side, I don't want to get gazillions of email responses from our friends from the spam department. That's why I thought, the best compromise might be keeping this on a level you are all familiar with.It is not the number of helpful votes that matters - it is the combination of votes and replies.Replies are even better.Cheers,MarkusMarkus Vilcinskas, Knowledge Engineer, Microsoft Corporation

The FIM documentation is not working if we want install CA + FIM + SQL server 2008 on the same server Windows server 2008 R2 enterprise. The documentation about ILM 2007 is not available for FIM 2010. Someone have one clear documentation step-by-step to install and to configure FIM 2010 for one server 2008 R2 enterprise with SQL, CA.. because it's fastidious. I would like use certificates and smart cards. Please, help me !

Is it just me, or did FIM disappear from the left pane navigation menu in Technet (for IE8 and FF 3.6, at least..)? I can get to the docs due to bookmarks I have, but can't navigate in the menu.

The table of contents has changed somewhat. If you go to the TechNet home page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx You can select "Forefront" under "Products." On that page you can select the link for Forefront Identity Manager 2010, which has links to the technical library and developer documentation. Here is the Tech Center page for FIM 2010: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/forefront/cc470030.aspx There is a link to "Forums" under "Key Links." There have been some changes to TechNet and MSDN that have caused problems for some of the content posted there. You might want to check which "View" of the TechNet library or MSDN Library is selected. In the upper right corner of the browser (while looking at a library) you will see "Classic" and "Script Free" options (MSDN also has "Lightweight" View). If you select the "Script Free" or "Lightweight" options you will not see as much of the TOC on the left of the screen. In the case of SDK content, you might not be able to browse to some APIs at all if you are not using the "Classic" view.

Hi Markus, I know there were several posts in the past regarding the CHM developer reference with requests to bring that back. I would really like to see all of the documentation included in the help filtes that are distributed with the product (from the TechNet side and the MSDN side). Somehow, things are much easier to find in the help files than online - I think it has to do with the way the sections are linked online. -Jeremy

The FIM 2010 SDK developer docs have now been released in .chm format here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=9bb2ce6c-1a72-4897-8d7f-5d5c8974c9c5 This should include the exact same content that is currently on MSDN for FIM 2010 SDK. I'm sorry that I could not build a single chm that contains all of the info, but I can't due to a publishing restriction. There are 3 chms: one for FIM Service SDK, one for FIM Synchronization Service SDK, and one for FIM Certificate Management SDK.

Some are now posted on the download center (download.microsoft.com). You can search for FIM 2010 and find at least four - those that I posted recently. I will provide links here for your convenience: Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 Backup and Restore Microsoft® Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 Capacity Planning Guide Microsoft® Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) Configuration Migration Deployment Guide Microsoft® Forefront Identity Manager Certificate Management (FIM CM) Backup and Restore Now, if you are looking for a specific document that you want posted to the download center, please, let us know. Those requested specifically by name will likely be given higher priority in the queue. There are several writers working in this area, so schedules factor into how quickly you get to see these on the download center. Also, it is not just a simple matter of posting a Word document, as you might think. There is quite a process that we have to go through in order to post to the download center, but for now that is our only approved release platform for compiled documents.

I asked our bosses about PDFs and we can release documents in that format. However, in our publishing database it is tricky to assemble a single giant FIM document in any format. I tried several, but PDF and CHM (help file format) seemed the closest to actually working. As it is today, it would take quite a while to create the initial file and by the time we got it posted, we would already need an update. The best I can tell you right now is that this is a capability that we really want to provide and we are pursuing it. There is a team working on trying to figure out how we could routinely build downloadable versions, including PDFs of from our publishing database. It just takes a lot of perseverence on our end, so feel free to keep pushing us. :-)

I can proof anything if need be....Joe Stepongzi - Identity Management Consultant www.microsoftIdM.com,ilmXframework.codeplex.com
