Need to log in as admin after deployment to set default browser?!
Hey, using SCCM2007R2 to deploy Windows XP images. Part of our deployment is deploying a new browser using a "custom" MSI. (We're actually using vmware ThinApp to virtualize google chrome and deploy that as the default browser for all users...) Here's the problem. The deployment runs just fine, but when the regular users logs on to the computer the "internet" option in the start menu is "blank" and when clicked only opens up the "Internet options" from the Control Panel. This is rather confusing as we know that the MSI installer sets the correct things. To make matters more annoying, if we then log on as an administrator on this machine it will register Google Chrome as the default browser. For all users. Of course, using SCCM for a nearly no-hands-on deployment it's rather irritating to be forced to log on as an admin just to fix the browser issue... I'm not quite sure where the "blame" for this is, the OSD part, the software deployment part or (hopefully not) with the vmware ThinApp installer. Any suggestions are welcome :)

Hi gojensen, I wouldnt be placing the blame on the OSD. What does your task sequence look like? Are you deploying a basic XP WIM imae, and then installing Google Chrome as as task? Cheers, Adrian.

Hi, Do you have the hofix for Browser choice installed in the image? "Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows 7 Client, Windows Vista, and Windows XP (KB976002)" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976002 That could case it. No, we've specifically taken care to NOT download that update - and this is even before SCCM has had time to apply system updates to the computer. So I don't think that's it...

It's a rather basic image previously captured. It goes a little something like this (I think it's pretty much like the default TS) Capture Files and Settings Install Operating System (partition disk, apply WIM, join domain) Setup Operating System (setup windows and configmgr client) Install software (they all work just fine - some 20+ packages) Restore User Files and Settings So since we just do bare metal deployment the first and last step are basically useless. Then when the machine is ready, I log on as my user - internet option in start menu is "blank" and loads "internet options" Then I log on as administrator - internet option says Chrome and load Chrome Then I log on as my user - internet option says Chrome and load Chrome So for some reason it seems XP needs an Admin to log on locally to "approve" the install for "all users". Previously we always logged on as admin to fix some driver issue, but that has been taken care of now so we have a zero touch deployment - except for this issue which we didn't notice previously (since we always logged on an admin manually). The problem is that basically we can't give every user that is going to deploy XP admin rights :-/ So it's maybe not a OSD issue, but a software deployment issue? Or a Windows issue? I must admit I can't make anything usefull out of this myself :D

Why don't you just set the default browser by GPO?Blair Muller

Hm, using registry preferences? Thing is... someHOW it looks like Windows won't recognize the new browser untill an Admin logs on. I made a chrome.reg file which correctly registers Chrome as the default browser and ran it (as Admin) on a test system. The user still didn't get a browser untill I logged on the Admin account and relogged the user account. There's something weird going on here... and I can't see what :-/

This behavior is caused by the design of the browser. The browser needs to initialize in order to configure settings for all users' profiles. However you can only finish it with an administrator user. I suggest you post in Chrom forums and ask if you can finish the initialization via command lines or scripts and if so you may try to make a stratup scrip to finish it.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Been thinking about this one Arthur. And I'm not so sure... We don't need to run Chrome to get it to work. And in truth we are not using the Google installer; we've virtualized the app using VMware ThinApp and deployed it via a MSI...
