Need advice on Office 2013 Corrupt Install

A client of mine recently purchased, downloaded and installed MS Office 2013 Home and Business. The installation didn't work correctly from the first use. He opened Outlook the first time to have it crash repeatedly. As well as all the other corresponding MS Office 2013 software. Upon uninstalling the new MS Office 2013 software his Outlook .pst was corrupted and crashed Outlook repeatedly. After many hours of uninstalling, deleting and reinstalling his old MS Office software several times. I was able to get the .pst functioning again. Since then the computer has crashed several times, takes forever to login and runs slow as hell. He clearly needs further work done on his Windows profile and more then likely a full backup, format and reinstall of everything.

He is looking at hours worth of work that was all caused by the corrupted install. I know this because I did a full system diagnostic and printed out all the results earlier in the day when I was onsite for his yearly system check. He called the MS Office Sale and Tech support and they bounced him around between the store and customer service.

My question at this point is; does he have any recourse with Microsoft for the repair of this issue? At one point on the phone with customer service they to my client to "bring the machine into the MS store", is that a viable option?

I appreciate any and all help with this issue as Im not sure how to advise my client any further...

Thank you!!

Provide more details here, maybe some in this forum can help.

So he already uninstalled Office 2013 and installed his old version of Office?  "takes forever to login" -- login to what? Windows? Office?

With lots of uninstall and install attempts, there must be lots of remnants on his computer which might be the cause here.

I would prefer to start from scratch at this point which miht be a faster/easier workaround.

Hi Domenic,

Thank you for your post and we are sorry for the inconvenience.

So the user already switched back to the earlier version of Office, right? As A.B asked, what kind of login prompt did he/she see?

We strongly recommend you take below steps before trying the installation again:

  • Completely remove the earlier version of Office from the computer by runing Microsoft Fix It tool. Remnants from previous version of Office might affect the installation sometimes.
  • Install any available updates and restart the computer

If Office applications crash again after the reinstallation, please share related crash log with us, we will have a further look then.

You can contact us anytime you need help with any Microsoft products. Or if you live near a Microsoft Store, you can bring your devrice there, we offer live 24/7 technical support in Microsoft Store.

Hope this helps and please feel free to post back with any findings.

Hi Guys,

First, thank you for your responses!

To be clear I don't need help correcting the issue. I am a Microsoft Certified Profession and have been operating my own repair business for 10 years.

I have already totally uninstalled and removed everything from MS 2013 as well as all the old 2007 Software. MS Office 2007 is functioning correctly now. The problem is that the software corrupted my clients Windows User Profile as well as his .pst. The machine can take up to 5min loging into the Windows User. As well as runs like hell when finally logged in. I know what needs to be done to repair the machine as well.

My issue is the fact that my client doesn't feel he should have to pay me to repair a problem caused by a Corrupt MS Office download. Weather he has me repair the issue or not he is looking for some recourse with Microsoft for the damages and repair. That is what I'm looking for advise with...

User can call Microsoft support anytime if they have any problem with MS product. This is only for Online help, however, for lots of issues, Online help really doesn't help too much, especially, when the user/client got no computer background at all. As for the MS store, they only have a few in some city. If your city doesn't have one, then it doesn't help either.
