Navigation doesnt contain the subsites
Hi All, Im having a MOSS 2007 server and its working fine.. We are using it for intranet purpose.. In the home page of 80 port site we had several tabs like project Helpdesk Dashboard... And inside project we had the list of projects and each subsite for each project... Few days before when i tried to see the navigation of the home site there is nothing in it... The tabs are seen in the homesite but the navigation both curent and global is displaying nothing on it... when i click on it it is simply the same and no change in it... I tried various areas but couldnt locate it.. But for the subsites navigation is properly working i could add link and so on... Only the home site doesnt show any navigation links.. What to do for this...? Thanks in Advance, Regards, Siva.

In your homesite, click Site Actions->Site Settings->Navigation, please check if the “show subsites” option is checked in Site Navigation Settings page. The links to subsites won’t be displayed in global and current navigation if this option is not checked.

Another possible reason is you won’t be able to see the sub sites in the global navigation bar if you don’t have permission in the sub sites.

Hi GuYuming, Thanks for the response.. I also noticed thet the modify navigation under the site settings option is disabled.. So there could be a possiblity of permission... How to check it and how to overcome it.. Pls provide some guidelines. Thanks in Advance, Regards, Siva..

You can check whether you have permissions at site actions - site settings- Advance permissions.I think you need to hav atleast Full Control permissions or above to perform the navigation modifications. It is basically the 'Add and Customize Pages - Add, change, or delete HTML pages or Web Part Pages, and edit the Web site using a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible editor. ' permissions which gives you the option to do the html modifications in the site.Contact the site administrator to for 'Full Control ' permissions in the site.ONce u have the above permissions, you can go at Site Actions -Site settings- Navigations - and check the option - Show subsites, to make the subsites visible in the site.Cheers!........ Hi Ajith George, I had been given the site administrator username and password only.. Im having full permission over the site.. But when i go to site actions--> site settings --> Modify Navigation is disabled... The navigation page shows nothing only the headings current navigation and global navigation are present.. I think this is due to site permission but how to get that permission i tried with advanced permission.. But no use.. The only thing disabled is modify navigation... What to do get it enabled.. Thanks is Advance... Regards, Siva..

According to the site settings permission matrix in the SharePoint permission matrix workbook downloaded from http://blogs.msdn.com/markarend/archive/2008/02/14/sharepoint-2007-permissions-matrix.aspx, you need “Add and Customize Pages permission“ in order to access the navigation setting in site settings.

Hi GuYuming, Ya i understood that inorder to view modify navigation i must have the "Add and Customize Pages Permission".. But how to get that permission .. Since im new to sharepoint i doesnt know the exact place where i could add that permission.. Could you please let me know where i can make that permission.. it is not in Advanced permission.. I checked out in central Administration and all the options are selected in the user permission for web application... For the subsites the navigation is fine and can be accessible. We are using MOSS 2007 sp2 pack.. Regards, Siva...

Hi, Ajith George had suggested you to set the permission level to “Full Control” in site actions - site settings-> Advance permissions. To check whether the “Full Control” permission level contains the “Add and Customize Pages Permission”, you can click settings-permission levels in the site advance permission page (_layouts/user.aspx) . For detail, please refer to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/HA101001431033.aspx .

Hi, I checked the advance settings and the administrator has full control permission. I checked the permission level it is having the "Add and customize pages Permission" is selected for it. Even though the Modify navigation is disabled ... What to do for this.. Should i add any permission through stsadm commands... Regards, Siva..

Hi, When i click the site settings a drop down menu is coming containing create site edit page.... sites settings.. when i mouse the mouse over sites settings it is prompting three options Modify all site settings People and Group and Modify Navigation.. In that the Modify Navigation alone disabled it couldnt be clicked .. Rather than it all other options in site actions are enabled.. But if i click modify all site settings there is navigation option i could be able to click it. But in the navigation page only headings are present no subsites link or nothing is present.. Siva, Can you please provide a screen shot of what you are seeing in the navigation settings page. The modify navigations at site actions - site settings from home page may be disabled using some javascript or Jquery, no issues, its the same place wher you are right now. At top there are two check boxes Show subsites and Show pages - Can you see that..The page is one which you get on adding : /_layouts/AreaNavigationSettings.aspx to the site url.Cheers!....Regards, Aj (http://www.ajittgeorge.blogspot.com) MCTS

Hi Siva, Had same issue. Try this. For me this was due to total no of sub sites > 20. 1. Site Settings 2. Navigation 3. Change/Set - "Maximum number of dynamic items to show within this level of navigation:" to 30 for Global Navigation and Current Navigation 4. Click OK Hope helps:) Mayank
