Navigation Page Sort Order Reversed

Hi all,

I have an issue where the Feb 2014 CU seems to have reversed the sort order for all pages in both current and global menus. The problem occurs in Site Actions > Look and Feel > Navigation when "Show Pages" is checked for "Global Navigation" and/or "Current Navigation" and "Sorting" is set to "Automatic Sort". If I sort by title ascending, the pages sort descending and the rest sort ascending. If I sort by title descending, the pages sort ascending and the rest sort descending. If I select "Manual Sort" and then "Sort pages automatically", the pages will sort in the correct order, but then when other new items are added they will have to be manually sorted, or the setting will have to be changed to automatic then back to manual with pages automatic.

I have looked through the KBs for the CUs that have been released post Feb 2014, but do not see mention of this being fixed (or any mention of it at all). Before this update everything worked fine and nothing else has changed to cause this. Does anyone know if this was fixed and if so by which update?

I am hoping to avoid a coded solution for this as the navigation does not have the same settings across all sites so this would have to be done on a site-by-site basis.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

J.

Hi,

From your description, my understanding is that your navigation page sort with wrong order when you choose Sort automatically after you update SharePoint 2010 Feb CU.

As this issue occurs after you update SharePoint 2010 Feb CU, and you do not want to solve the issue with code. I suggest that you could update your SharePoint to the latest CU.

You could get the latest CU from this article:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2015/04/14/april-2015-cu-for-sharepoint-2010-has-been-released.aspx

And you could see each CU from this article:

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I cannot jump to the latest CU at this time. I am hoping someone might know which, if any, CU was the first to fix this. I am currently installing each one, one-by-one, to find it, but this is a real pain. Seeing that none of the CU "release notes" mentions this issue and I have been unable to find anything while googling, I am thinking there may not be a fix and will have to work on a coded solution.

Thanks,

J.

Hi,

If you want to manage your navigation page sort order with code, you could configure your navigation page with PowerShell for reference:

Programmatically configuring menu items in SharePoint 2010

You could also refer to this article about managing navigation with C#:

Thanks Vincent. I will have a look at the referenced articles.

I ended up installing every CU up to the latest (April 2015) sequentially and it seems this issue has not been addressed by any of them. I never did see any posts online after a lot of Googling so I am not sure if MS is even aware of it. I do find it odd that it has gone over a year unnoticed though.

My findings:
Issue DID NOT occur in the following:
* Tested 9 production web applications spanning 4 SP2010 farms that WERE NOT updated to Feb 2014 or later CU
* Tested 8 testing web applications spanning 4 SP2010 farms that WERE NOT updated to Feb 2014 or later CU
* Tested 3 web applications on a dev SP2010 VM with minimal custom solutions PRE update to Feb 2014 CU

Issue DID occur in the following:
* Tested 7 production web applications spanning 2 SP2010 farms that WERE updated to Feb 2014 CU
* Tested 3 testing web applications on a single SP2010 farm that WAS updated to Feb 2014 CU
* Tested 3 web applications on a dev SP2010 VM with minimal custom solutions POST update to Feb 2014 CU

Thanks for the help.

Have you solved this issue with any further CU, a Hotfix, or anything other measures?

Any solid answers on how to fix this issue?

Hi Matt,

Unfortunately there does not seem to be a fix at this time. We are getting a case opened with MS so they can have a look and either advise us on a solution or add it to a future CU. Once I get some more info I will add an update.

Thanks,

J.

Final resolution after working with MS on this issue is that there will be no fix for this. The hotfix was rejected since it can worked around by manually sorting. Mainstream support for SP2010 will be ending 13 Oct of this year so most likely it will never be fixed.

Going to be fun trying to explain that to all of our clients...

Thanks,

J.
