MySite create failure: ULS=Skipping auto-upgrade/instantiation

Hi.

I've got an issue I'm having trouble resolving.

SharePoint 2013 farm with MySite host configured and 64 MySites created by end users;
It was brought to my attention some users can't "follow", so I explained they need to setup a MySite... but users are now unable to create MySites.

So I tried replicating the issue and sure enough when they click on OneDrive, it just takes them back to their profile page.

So I double check self creation, permissions, Manage User Permissions and managed paths all OK.
Checked logs and when ever somebody clicks the OneDrive link the follow appear:
User profile property 'EduUserRole' not found from from MySitePersonalSiteUpgradeOnNavigationWebPart::GetUserRoleFromProfile(). This should indicate that the current user is not an edudation user.
Skipping auto-upgrade/instantiation from MySitePersonalSiteUpgradeOnNavigationWebPart::RenderWebPart() because this user is a Profile Only user.

If I go to the User Profile Management page (under UPA) and check the box "My Site Upgrade:", then the user will have a MySite created and see the "Let's get social" page.

I'm stumped.

Any help/insight much appreciated.

Thanks.

No that didn't help; if you read my post you'll note I checked those items.

May be you can shed some light on the following message:

Skipping auto-upgrade/instantiation from MySitePersonalSiteUpgradeOnNavigationWebPart::RenderWebPart() because this user is a Profile Only user.

Thanks.

Hello Iios.co,

Sounds like you are using the Eduction feature of SharePoint 2013, you can read about it on Trevor's blog:

Hi - Sorry if this is a late reply.

Based on the error message, the User is a Profile Only User - which means that User needs to be given Manage Profiles permission.

To grant Manage Profiles permission, please follow the below steps.

  1. Navigate to SharePoint 2013's Central Administration.
  2. Select Application Management, and go to Manage Service Applications under the Service Applications heading.
  3. Highlight the User Profile Service Application line to open the Ribbon menu. Select the Administrators button in the ribbon to open the Administrators for User Profile Service Application dialog.
  4. If the user account is not already listed Add them. Give the user account the Manage Profiles permission from the list. This user account only needs the Manage Profiles permissions, and does not need Full Control.
  5. When finished add any required user accounts and/or permissions, click OK to finish.

Question in adding rights other than full rights. When I go to add rights, the only option I have to select is "full rights". Is there a method to define a Permissions group that would show up when adding permissions to the service application?
