Multiple ways to monitor a service; whats the difference?
Hi Jeffrey, With the service unit monitor you can generate an alert. The Windows Service monitor can monitor whether a service is running, the percentage of available CPU the service is consuming, and the memory allocated only to this service. Here is the instructions: How to Create a Windows Service Monitor: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd362718.aspx How to Create a Windows Services Unit Monitor in Operations Manager 2007: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb381240.aspxPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi The Authoring Template allows you to monitor any service created with the call SERVICE_WIN32_OWN_PROCESS – these are the only services that will display in the wizard so you won't be able to monitor all services with the authoring template. The Authoring template creates a class called Authoring Template - <TemplateName> and a set of monitors. This means that you can add the service object to a distributed application as it is a discovered object. The Basic (unit) Service Monitor allows you to monitor services created with SERVICE_WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS. You specify the target for this monitor when you run the wizard - noclass is created. You can also use the Authoring Console to create a class for your service and write your own monitors. Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Hi Graham, Thanks for your reply. Is it necessary to create a group first which contains the servers who have the process running, or can i just target the "all windows computers" group? Looking forward to your reply. Regards, Jeffrey-Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey Are you looking at the process monitor template or the service monitor template? For both I would create the group and add the specific servers to that group. Then "target" that group when you run the wizard. The group isn't really the target as the wizard creates a class with the name that you gave when you ran the wizard. I explain in full here: http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/2009/11/13/241/ Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Hi all, we are using some 3rd party applications on our servers and we want to monitor the services on these computers. When i open the Authoring page, i can create a monitor under "Management Pack Templates --> Windows Service" or "Management Pack Objects --> Monitors --> Create Unit Monitor --> Basic Service Monitor". Does anyone have some information about these options including their pro's and con's? Thanks in advance! Regards, Jeffrey-Jeffrey
