Multiple site setup with SCCM and Software deplyment
We have 10 sites, but i'm mainly concerned with only 6 of them that house the most people ranging from 30 to 100 at each. I currently have 1 SCCM server at our corporate office and am in the process of testing out software deplyment to one of the other sites. We do use a replicated DFS folder that has all our software in it and is location aware but apparently SCCM and software deployment won't select he DFS location that is on site but instead takes the files from our corporate office. Now, I'm looking at doing other SCCM servers at the other locations. Is this the best apporach or is there a way to use the DFS replication with 1 server installed? If i just want the software to be pushed out on the sites, should i use the secondary server for all the sites or a branch distribution point? Thank you for your help,

Hi, It depends on the bandwidth between the HQ and the branch offices. The main benefit with a BDP is that BITS is used to copy packages between the site server and the BDP. But from the BDP to local clients the traffic is SMB. With a secondary site in place you can control the bandwidht (by configuring adresses), and the traffic from the local DP to clients can be BITS. I personal like a secondary site better than a BDP.Kent Agerlund | http://scug.dk/members/Agerlund/default.aspx | The Danish community for System Center products

Thanks Kent, is there a problem with having 5 other secondary sites? A little more info. All the sites are connected by VPN's to each other. All the sites have atleast a 4.5MB connection and the corporate office has a DS3 connection.

You can have as many secondary sites as you want/need. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum |

Sccm has its own mechanism for selecting the most local distribution point. However if DFS is what you are comfortable with that can work too. Most important thing to note when going for DFS is that the UNC path to the root of your DFS needs to be part of your program's command line. Which is a bit counter-intuitive for most SCCM Admins."Everyone is an expert at something" Kim Oppalfens Configmgr expert for lack of any other expertise. http://www.scug.be/blogs/sccm

Hi, Like Kent said, the benefit for configuring SUP on secondary site is saving the traffic when the client talks to SUP toto determine what updates are application, installed etc and which ones to request to download/install from the DP. The software updates come from the distribution points to the client, so the bulk of the traffic will occur from the DP whether there is a SUP there or not. The following flowchart describe how the client select the DP: Content Location Flowchart for Distribution Point Selection http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb932150.aspxPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
