Multicast OSD over the WAN possible?
We are in the planning phase of SCCM 2007 r2 deployment and I have some question that we've not been able to find answer the Docs. We would like to Deploy windows 7 across our WAN link to one of our remote offices using Multicast. So, I was wondering if any of you have experience with mulitcasting and autocasting OSD/software packages across the WAN. We have an OC3 connection between our main office and remote office, so I think our link is fast enough. Thanks in advance

i havnt tried it but some questions would have to be raised (and i'm sure there are more) 1. does your isp/provider allow multicast traffic ? 2. are your routers/firewalls/switches configured to allow that traffic to transfer to the wan ? My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Nialls question are spot on and this really isn't a question of ConfigMgrs capabilities; it should instead be addressed to your network team. Multicast is simply a protocol ConfigMgr (actually WDS) implements. What actually happens to the multicast traffic is up to your network infrastructure.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

Thanks for your response Guys. I should have mentioned that we are currently able to multicast Cisco IP TV traffic to our remote office, and we have also been able to multicast windows images using another product. Please take a look at the following Doc which is the reason for my post. Look under the heading " Network Considerations for Multicast". http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc431383.aspx "Operating system images are never d"istributed from a remote distribution point using multicast." Thanks again

We opperate in a virtual environment, so we would like to take avantage of our fast WAN links to avoid purchasing and deploying hardware(DPs) for our remote sites.
