Multicast Deployment registry setting 2008r2
Hi, First of all I'm running server 2008r2, sccm sp2 r3 and attempting multicast. I have read a lot of posts about slow multicast and registry settings that apply to it. Most settings I notice relate to windows server 2008(not r2) and don't apply. However mostly what I'm asking is what the following registry settings actually are. I can see that they definitely affect the multicast performance but I would like to know that they do so that I can send them through to my network guys to attempt to optimise it for our equipment. At the moment I can multicast at around 40Mbit/s on a 1Gb lan. Although this is substantially quicker than multicast I would like to see if I can get it a little higher. The registry settings I refer to are located at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSMC\Protocol Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks Warwick

Hello - Have you checked the blow thread? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/configmgrosd/thread/31af7908-69ab-4533-a6f6-7dfdc56520ac See the replies from Niall C. Hi there, I have read that thread among many others. However I note the following. The registry entries that are referred to in that thread are not current for server 2008 r2 only for server 2008. I have found a lot of values to tweak but would really like to know what they are for so that I can tweak with purpose so to speak. Any help anyone can give me would be great. Thanks Warwick

Hello - Ithink, the reason is mentioned in the above mentioned thread? Did you see that? Niall C. BradyMVP have you looked at this post about the same thing, there are some registry settings which can be tweaked as the gui settings relating to multicast sometimes get ignored.... Thanks Niall, I know that the reason is mentioned. However there is no mention anywhere of those registry settings and what they do. In windows 2008r2 the wds registry settings that are mentioned in all of the above forums do not exist. There are similar (and I mean similar ones) at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSMC\Protocol However they are not the same. Apparently for example according to http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2010/09/22/new-kb-wds-multicast-settings-in-the-distribution-point-properties-do-not-seem-to-apply-in-system-center-configuration-manager-2007-r2-and-r3.aspx Windows 2008r2 ignores the values of Transfer rate set in SCCM and automatically determines the best transfer rate. As follows: IWdsTransportServicePolicy::NetworkProfile Property http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb736515(VS.85).aspx "Windows Server 2008 R2: This property is ignored and has no effect. This property is ignored and has no effect. A WDS Transport Server on Windows Server 2008 R2 automatically uses the optimal network profile." The registry settings that I am chasing the meaning of are. "TpMultistreamDemoteInterval"=dword:000001f4 "TpSecHMACKeyLen"=dword:00000000 "TpMaxRepairs"=dword:00000002 "TpAutoKickThreshold"=dword:00040000 "TpMultistreamCount"=dword:00000002 "TpSecHashAlgId"=dword:0000800c "TpOpenWindowInterval"=dword:000000c8 "TpCloseCacheInterval"=dword:00000258 "ApBlockSize"=dword:00002251 "TpSecHMACKeyAlgId"=dword:00006603 "TpCacheSize"=dword:00002e7c "TpClientInactiveTimeout"=dword:0000ea60 "TpSlowClientWaitTime"=dword:00001388 "TpExpWindowSize"=dword:00000002 "TpSecurityMode"=dword:00010001 "ApBootBlockSize"=dword:00000400 "ApInactiveSessionTimeout"=dword:000493e0 "TpKeepAliveInterval"=dword:00003a98 "ApInactiveNamespaceTimeout"=dword:001b7740 "TpMaxBwPerSessionGroup"=dword:00000000 "TpSocketSendSize"=dword:00000010 "TpMaxBandwidth"=dword:00000064 "ApCRRMergeInterval"=dword:00007530 "ApForceCIRInterval"=dword:0000ea60 "TpSecHMACAlgId"=dword:00008009 "TpKickInterval"=dword:00003a98 "SrvAllowBootClients"=dword:00000001 "TpSlowClientHandling"=dword:00000001 "TpSlowClientFallback"=dword:00000001 "TpSecRSAKeyLen"=dword:00000800 "TpMaxWindowSize"=dword:00000008 "TpSocketRecvSize"=dword:00000010 "TpOpenCacheInterval"=dword:00000014 "TpMulticastTTL"=dword:00000020 "TpForceIPv4"=dword:00000001 "TpPacketSigning"=dword:00000000 "TpPacketSecurity"=dword:00000001 Does anyone know what they mean? I also would like to know what the settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSMC\Protocol registry key do. I would like to setup WDS to separate clients and also disconnect clients that are very slow (based on KBPS) We are in an environment where 70% of our switch/routers support multicast and 30% do not so I need to disconnect clients that are on a switch/router that does not support multicast
