Moving databases
I feel i am close to resolving this but need to clarify the steps with someone. I have an old sharepoint server that is 32 bit. I have installed a new server that is 64 bit. I have made sure both sharepoint version numbers are the same. I have then created a web app on the new server and named it the same as the old servers web app. I have not at this stage created a Site Collection. I have then backed up using Central Admin on the old server. I have attached the WSS_Content.mdf database to the New Server. I have changed the DNS path to point to the new server. I have shut down the old server and tried to browse to the site using the same URL, but the site does not show. I dont know what databases to move, these are listed below: Master.mdf Model.mdf msdbdata.mdf Sharepoint_Admin (I dont think i need to move this one) Sharepoint_Config (I dont think i need to move this one) Tempdb.mdf WSS_Content.mdf WSS_Content.mdf (Moved) WSS_Search(servername).mdf Can anyone please help me understand what i need to do in order to resolve this.

hi fasttest You need to associate the Web Application with it's content DB. In Central Admin > App Management > Content Database > Add a Content Database > specify the name of your DB that you moved (WSS_Content). then disassociate the new db that was created when you created the new web app on the new sp server. hope this helpsTony Parker, MSCE . Hi All, FYI you need to remove the NEW Content Db prior to adding the OLD Content Db to the NEW Web Application, please review the Technet Article below (Migrate databases) the Tetchnet articles discuss performing a Content Db migration in order to perfrom an upgrade If you are either moving to new hardware or redesigning and restructuring your deployment, you can choose to migrate your databases from the old version to the new version. Old Environment 1. In SQL make FULL Backups of your Dbs. 2. Copy Baks to NEW Environment New Environment 1. In SQL Rename the Content Dbs while Restoring to NEW server 2. Install SharePoint to same patch level as the OLD Environment 3. Add Solutions or Features to Farm so the OLD and NEW 12 hive and WebSite Folders are the same 4. Create your NEW Web Applications 5. Remove the Content Dbs that were just created with the NEW Web Applications 6. Add the Restored Content Dbs from OLD Environment 7. Perform Restore of SSP using the Restored Dbs OLD Environment Reference Prepare the new Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263026(office.12).aspx Migrate databases http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263299(office.12).aspx Step by Step http://msmvps.com/blogs/cgross/archive/2007/05/09/moving-a-wss-3-0-site-to-a-new-farm.aspx Restore a production sharepoint web farm to a new web farm http://vspug.com/sam/2007/10/02/restore-a-production-sharepoint-farm-to-a-test-environment/ -Ivan Ivan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.
