Moving Web Parts
Hi Peeps, I'm having an issue with Webparts in my publishing sites. Each site is set up with out of the box web parts and they are laid out in web zones accross the page. When some of the sites' users log in all the web parts change zones to the bottom right zone of the page. I've tried locking the Web parts by unticking the Allow Zone Change box in the modify web part menu but this doesn't stop them changing only stops me moving them back. I've also tried changing the master page and site themes incase the issue was there but unfortunately to no avail. To give an idea of the site, it's a college site containing a huge amount of documentation and is accessed by two seperate networks (1 parent network and a 2nd junior network) the issue so far has only seemed to affect the junior network although once the page has been changed it is then changed for both network users. If anyone has any ideas I'd be really greatful. Neil

Hi Tony, Accross the college we use IE8 and screen resolutions are set to 1024 x 768. The majority of PC's run on Win XP pro but we are using Win 7 64bit in the IT office. Neil

hello just as idea: did you check version history of the pages? May be this some user from college moved them manually. Or you saw that web parts are automatically moved when user logged in? In the last case is this issue reproducible for one particular user or it is common for all users?Blog - http://sadomovalex.blogspot.com CAML via C# - http://camlex.codeplex.com Graphs visualization in Sharepoint - http://spgraphviz.codeplex.com

The issue doesn't seem to affect all users just a few (I count 20 out of 6000 users so far). Initially I did think that someone was moving the webparts but having set up a new site with just 3 users it started happening to that one as well. The issue only seems to be affecting sites that have been set up in the last 6 months as all sites before then are still holding their layout without issue. I have been through the Log and there are no reports of any Critical,Failure or warning issues at all. I did try yesterday setting up a new site using my Secondary login and then accessing it with a Primary login and the sites webparts moved straight away. I then tried to create a site using the primary login and then tested it with other users and it was working fine. As soon as I used one of the secondary logins it changed the layout over to the bottom right web zone.

Yep sorry I didn't mention in my last post, I've checked sites version history and it's not showing anything out of the ordinary. One of sites for example is showing 19.1 versions and my name is next to all of the entrys except 1 which is from when I re applied the layout using a different login. There are no details in any of the versions when i open them to show anything regarding the web parts only details of the text in site content.

Resolved the issue. One of the Site admins had changed the master page template to have the web zones numbered, this then caused the error right through all of the sites. The different users who were seeing the affected changes, was caused by cached settings within their roaming profiles. Once their profiles updated everyone had the same view with web parts to the right. We reset the master page back to it's default and then went through each site and moved the web parts back to the location we wanted them in. Problem resolved.
