Move from HP Data Protector to DPM 2012 R2

Hi,

Im moving from HP Data Protector to DPM 2012 R2.

What is the best way to migrate our tape data to DPM tape?

One way i can see, is to restore the HP Data Protector tape data and have DPM backup it up and store on tape.

Hi,

Yes, that is the only way to get 3rd party backup tape data onto DPM tapes.  The challenge is to maintain a catalog of the data that came from data protector tapes and what DPM tape it is on.  DPM will not know about the source machines that data came from, so knowing what data is on what tape will be important.  The easier option is to start all new backups with DPM and just use the old tapes for restores for older data.  Yes, you need to maintain the HP data protector in case you need to do an old restore, but that saves a lot of time and heartache converting the tapes.
