Move a SP site to become a subsite of another site
I'm preparing to move a site to become a sub site. The sub site has been active and contains lots of pages and documents, and has several permission levels. The parent site is fairly new and contains little data, but has global read only permissions across the company. My questions of the moment are: 1. Will permissions from the sub site carry over to the parent site? 2. Is there a way to download a list, by group, of individuals (within permission groups)? 3. I do not quite understand how, either before or after the move, to break permissions inheritance from the parent site. Thanks!

Permissions on the subsite may carry over depoendent on how they are set and how you move them To Break Iheritance and set Permissions Go to http://YourSitename/_layouts/user.aspx choose Actions / Edit User Permissions / Click OK / then Remove All the Current User Permissions and Add the correct users. -Ivan Ivan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

1. Will permissions from the sub site carry over to the parent site? If you use the 'stsadm -o export' cmdline tool (generally found at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN) to do this move, then you have the following options: stsadm.exe -o export -url <URL to be exported> -filename <export file name> [-overwrite] [-includeusersecurity] [-haltonwarning] [-haltonfatalerror] [-nologfile] [-versions <1-4> 1 - Last major version for files and list items (default) 2 - The current version, either the last major or the last minor 3 - Last major and last minor version for files and list items 4 - All versions for files and list items] [-cabsize <integer from 1-1024 megabytes> (default: 25)] [-nofilecompression] [-quiet] If you select -includeusersecurity, then the site will bring over its existing permissions.. if you leave that off, then it will forget permissions it already has an inherit that of the site above it. 2. Is there a way to download a list, by group, of individuals (within permission groups)? Unless you have many different groups that have access to this site, this doesn't seem (to me) to be necessary. Simply go to Site Actions/Site Settings/Advanced Permissions/Site Permissions and look at who has access to the site. If it is a group, then click 'Groups' on the left and view the group itself in question.. you can then export the user list for each group to a file, or whatever you want. 3. I do not quite understand how, either before or after the move, to break permissions inheritance from the parent site. Breaking permissions for a site isn't the same as a folder/document library/etc.. Think of it as a manual process. If Site A (named Parent) has 'Parent Owners' as a group with Full permissions , and the subsite also has the group 'Parent Owners' as a group with Full Permissions, then to fix, you just remove 'Parent Owners' and add whatever group you want as your Full Permissions group.
