Today we have are SCCM 2007 server installed on a 2003 server with a seperate SQL server. Know i want to move the SCCM 2007 server to a server with server 2008. What is the best way to accomplish this? Is it to install the new server with a new name and add it as a child server. Then replicate all objects down to the new server. and then break the relationship and add the new server as a parent server?

Backup and restore using the ConfigMgr backup task is your only option. Remember that the new server MUST have the same layout as the old server (C:\, D:\, etc)http://www.enhansoft.com/

As Garth is saying Backup/restore is the only option if you want to keep the existing site. Erik I have done this successfully. As Both Garth and Kent Mentioned I did it through a backup and restore. Make sure to keep the same server name and I kept the same ip. Be sure you are at the same patch level os wise and sql wise (if sql is local). Also be sure to backup you package folders (if local) and not on the network. The Basic steps are: Perform a backup, then shut everything down. Replace the hardware and ensure the configuration is identical - drives, names, paths, etc. Install the same software and pre-requisites Install Configuration Manager using the same settings and paths. So this works even if the site we have today is installed on a server 2003? And the new sccm server will be installed on a server 2008?
